an exhaust leak is hard to find but is very annoying and usually happen when enging is cold, you have o2 sensors that could be leaking, did the mechanic use factory gaskets, do you have Headers? The exhaust leak is the least expensive fixan exhaust leak is hard to find but is very annoying and usually happen when enging is cold, you have o2 sensors that could be leaking, did the mechanic use factory gaskets, do you have Headers? Still ticking on cold start up.exhaust manifold gaskets have been changed. Its using motul 5w40 full synthetic oil.Still ticking on cold start up.exhaust manifold gaskets have been changed. Its using motul 5w40 full synthetic oil.

A tapping noise that starts out cold and goes away when warm is usually caused by a valve lifter inside the engine. The lifter may be worn/leaking down and will be noisy until it fills with oil pressure. You can try an oil additive ( Lucas Oil Additive ) available at most part stores works very well with noisy lifters. Another noise that can happen cold and go away when warm is an exhaust manifold leak. However, this is normally a ticking type sound rather than a tapping sound.
The ticking noise could be a faulty hydrulic valve lifter. When last was the oil & filter changed, it coul be that the oil is thick and not going through to the lifters and when it warms up the oil is thin. It could be that the engine is need of an overhaul as 148.000 miles is 238.182 Kilometers and that is a hi milage.
If it goes away after the engine warms up it is likely loose pistons or worn piston skits. As long as it goes away after the engine is warm it won't hurt anything. It is common on engines with some age on them. When the engine get hot the pistons expand and the noise usually goes away.
on the 3.1 it is normal unless the ticking does not go away when warm. just keep oil clean and all should be ok. my 2000 malibu does the same thing. all 3.1 engines do this when cold.
Try using a lighter weight oil as the temperature gets colder outside the oil becomes thicker and takes more time for the more defeat the oil so that it may and pump up into the valves and etc most vehicles will tick until the oil warms and will go away ....also a higher grade of gas will also help
it may need a lifter or valve adjustment when cold they will tick or knock depending on how loose or worn out then when it warms up they swell with heast and noise stops. after adjusting or replacing it will stop making noise
Usually a ticking from the engine is caused by oil not coating the tappets. Tappets are the rods that control the intake and exhaust valves. Once the engine warms up oil is circulated to those parts and the ticking stops. Mopar is famous for that
