Black smoke loss of excellartion on incline ; still got plenty of power on flat and motorway management light on, was told EGR valve suspected? On 56 plate.
Needs piston rings. You have lost compression so you are losing power. The oil is getting pasty the worn rings and entering the combustion chamber which would explain the black smoke and loss of power.

things like the air sensor and idle valve will bring on the engine management light, get someone to rev the car up while you check the pressure at the back of the exhaust to check the cat or back box hasnt collapsed

I would try to change the O2 sensor. It's a matter of time before the fault warning light goes on again.
A bad O2 sensor can cause a random misfire across cylinders.
Could also be a coil pack or coil, but this would be picked up by OBD-II computer if there was a misfire in a specific cylinder.

The black smoke is blow-by you need a ring job. Oil is getting by the top ring of your pistons in one or more cylinders. Loss of power under a load is also indicative of this.
