Code 401 (P0401) indicates improper flow in the EGR. This type is vacuum operated. There is a good chance the vacuum line is leaking. Check the vacuum line ( a black rubber hose ) for dried areas, cracks or holes and that it is connected to the steel tube coming from the EGR. The bad areas are usually toward the engine and cannot be seen without removing the hose. Your hands will get a lot of black soot like stuff on them. Hose is 50 cents. See the image of Montero EGR. 2000 Mitubishi Montero Sport. The tail lights work but dash lights do not. The fuse is good. Any ideas what could be the problem and how to fix?

The rheostat is the little dial on the dashboard that alters the brightness of the dash lights. It isn't under the hood. If your turn it all the way down until it clicks, it will turn off the lights. It will be in your manual.

code p0400 refers to exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system--flow malfunction===causes--hoseleak/blockage, basic setting not carried out (if applicable)--wiring---EGR valve--EGR solenoid---ECM
As the EGR unit is susceptepable to corrosion. Check it out or replace it

Engine check lite comes on Code 401 Changed EGR valve and EGR Lite comes back on drive about 5 miles

Sounds like to me you have a faulty EGR vacuum solenoid which regulates the vacuum pressure sent to the EGR valve.

I have montero sport 2000 also. If you call your local mitsubishi dealer and give them your vin number on your rig they will be able to give you codes to punch into probbably your stereo that will reset a factory alarm. good luck...

I have a mitsubish montero and keep getting code 401 after putting in a new egr valve I have also replaced O2 sensors and cannot figure out why the code keeps coming up

make sure egr passage way from valve to intake not clogged and make sure exhaust to egr supply is present and make sure if valve is vacuum operated that senser is ok and vacuum supply correct if electial egr senser then intake probably clogged sense code 401 is insuffence egr flow
