Can not turn engine over with the key or remove the key from ignition.

That happened to me before. You have to put the car in park or neutral for the key to come out. It will probably start once you put it in park or neutral as well.

Can a brake switch keep the car from starting??

Many new cars have stuff interconnected. I've seen some that want you to press on the brake to get it out of park, put it in park to get the key out of the switch, etc. The cruise control is disconnected by the brake, and the car will beep at you if you leave anything on and try to take the key out.
Check with your owner's manual about your car's preferences. If the car is not properly in park or neutral, it won't start.

To start my 1997 E-150 van, I must put it in nuetral first. Any solution?

replace the park/neutral switch. The switch is mounted to the transmission. After installing the new switch, leave the screws a bit loose, set the parking brake, turn on the key, and put the transmission in reverse. Adjust the switch by rotating until the backup lights are on, and then tighten the screws.

you should be able to pull key out in neutral. It sounds like a brake pedal issue not making contact with switch for shifter. Happens a lot actually. Until you can get serviced do it like a manual for now and as I stated you should be able to pull keys out. Its a button behind brake pedal. Try pusing it but leave car in park. Its usually a green and black switch. Leave car e brake on though. Safety reasons. Hope this helps

The park pawl is spring loaded and it sounds like that spring has broken. The problem is, the trany has to be removed from the car and completely disassembled to fix it. The linkage for park is all mechanical, the transmission could be completely out of fluid and park should still work. I guess, I would get into the habbit of setting the park brake, then put the car in park and pull it out of park, before you release the park brake. You could also leave the shifter in the neutral position and set the park brake. This will allow you to start the car but you won't be able to remove the key. Hopefully the brake cables are not all rusted up. Good luck.
