Did you do a good visual inspection of the headlight area for anything obvious? Perhaps the crash jacked up your wiring. If you had to jimmy the switch to get high beams to work, that tells me the switch could be the problem. Take a look at a wiring diagram and do some basic troubleshooting if you have a multimeter. Here is a link with a couple of diagrams and suggestions that were given to another person with this problem.

SOURCE: Headlights won't turn on. Daytime running lights stay on.
My 2002 S10 had the same problem, I pulled off the bottom of the dashboard and bottom of the steering wheel cover (around 8 bolts). There's a plug on the left side behind the cruise control/high beam stalk with several wires attached to it. Turns out some of the wires had become brittle and moving the steering wheel up and down caused them to short. The four small wires for the cruise control all broke off. I pulled out the metal pins and reattached them to the wires, worked for a while...
SOURCE: daytime headlights wont go off
For starters unplug the battery so it won't go dead. It sounds like an electrical problem possible relay or module gone back. Be careful with this electrical stuff, get a pro to check it out.
SOURCE: Low Beam headlights not working
The daytime running lights run the high beam bulbs at low voltage so it sounds like you need to put the relays back where they were and either replace the low beam bulbs or repair the wiring to them. Also the relay you removed could be defective.

The blinking light is telling you that you have a headlight out, if you look the service light should be coming on when the light stops blinking.
Replace the head light and all should be fine.
