Normally due to low oil level. 2.75 QTS low from 5 qtswill make oil pump not be able to produce enough pressure. But is engine reved to four grand and kept there, should also make oil pressure drop after a while causing light to come on. If engine was designed for 10w-40 and u use 5-30 or synthetic 0w-20, then oil pressure may bebe low. Locate oilpress switch remove and install manual gauge. If pressure is below the 3-5 psi cut off pressure then you have major problems. Change oils and filter. If switch is located in oil Gally after the filter then oil filter could be plugged. Author way needs changed. What type and year are we working on?

Low oil pressure. check the level, too low and low pressure light comes on. Too low viscosity (eg 5-20) also can make it come on. If it is a high mileage engine, the pump is old and the guides are worn so oil escapes around seals and lowers the pressure, even if it is not apppearing to burn any.

This means a mechanical gauge test is required to check actual pressure warm idling if low below 20 psi then the oil pressure pump relief is stuck open or engine bearing are worn

    After reading one life 728 reply No lets talk about how pressure is made. #1 take a garden hose turn on water as high as it will go it will run out the end and go about 2-3 feet in front of you. The city water pressure lets say it is 30lbs. Now install that brass fire hose nozzle How far will the water go now about 3 times farther with the same pressure. So now in the engine at a given speed the oil pump pumps oil (not pressure) So if the suction side has no leaks (low oil, broken gasket on suction pipe ) That is all it does pumps oil through the filter and to the engine bearings where the clearance between the crankshaft and bearings (the fire nozzle) creates resistance to make pressure once this pressure becomes to great at any speed the oil pump has a pressure relief valve that opens and put excess oil back into the oil pan or suction side of the pump. a restricted oil filter will also cause this problem if the sending unit is after the filter. But clearance issues is the #1 concern bearings on main and rod bearings camshaft or broken oil squirters for the timing chain yes thicker oil keeps a higher pressure do to it takes up space until heated .

Speedometer

I take it that you only have 1 speedometer and that reads miles per hour or car speed . The left speedo? is in reality a tachometer and reads the engine revolutions per minute. When the engine is cold (before it reaches operating temperature) the CPU will keep the rpm's above 1000 (1 x1000) and when that temperature is reached the idle speed is reduced to normal operating rpm's. So yes it is normal. All you need to do is know the difference and the meaning of all the gauges.

I have a 1984 ford f150. The truck idles very high when in park but when you put in drive or reverse it goes down to normal. It has duel straight exhaust on it and I wonder if that could be the prob. Idk.

you didnt say if it was happening only during the initial warm up of the vehicle or all the time. if it is just during warm up this is not too unusual as long as the engine isnt racing. if it is just a "high idle", say arround 2,000 rpm's its normal. the idle would usually go down as the vehicle reaches operating temperature. when you put the vehicle in gear, you are actually loading the engine slightly, thats why the idle comes down then. when in park the engine has no load on it so it is free to rev a little higher at these times. if it a at a high idle constantly, then i would start looking for sticking throttle cable, binding throttle plates, ect and remedy the problem. this should not have anything to do with the dual exhaust.

When i start my toyota corolla small body in the morning, the idling goes up to 2000rpm, why is that so?

It is quite common for most cars to have an increased rev range when a engine is started from cold, as the temperature increases the revs will drop down.
Depending on the age of the car has a lot to do with it also, as older cars used an auto choke system until a warmer temperature was attained.
More modern cars don't neccessarily need extreme higher revs, but still operate with a thermostatic controller, that regulates the fuel flow via the fuel injection system.
before you do anything, consider
1/ You have to know also what rev range does the car operate at when its been running for a while, eg when its warm and idling does it rev at 600,800,1000.
2/ Make sure you don't have your air conditioner on when starting, as this increases revs also.
3/ How long is the increased revs lasting.
4/ Is this car a carburated model or fuel injection
5/ have a visual and check that there are no small vacuum pipes that have come off anywhere around the intake area of the motor. (Intake area can be found where you accelorator cable ends up.
6/ failing that when your car goes for its next service, bring this problem to the mechanics attention.
it can be difficult to diagnose problems like these unless your looking at the engine.

I hope this has helped somewhat

Oil Pressure Light Comes On after 10 min of Driving

You may not have put the right amount of oil in your car, your oil pressure sensor could be faulty, or you may have a leak.

By revving your engine, you're increasing the pressure and thus turning off the light and making the sensor think that it's at the correct pressure.

Oil light in 1999 Toyota camry comes on when idling.

bad to worn out oil pump or excessive oil passage clearances that allowing more oil to pass thru them at a lower pressure due to the bigger opening. It can be a sign of an emminant engine failure due to oil starvation.

Xterra repair

Since this is an intermittent problem, first try to determine if the problem arises due to one of these many intermittent problems:

* Vehicle vibration
* Heat sensitive
* Freezing
* Water intrusion
* Electrical load
* Cold or hot start up

If you can't isolate the cause of the intermittent problem, you can try adjusting the Idle Speed/Ignition Timing/Idle Mixture Ratio:

Idle Speed/Ignition Timing/Idle Mixture Ratio Adjustment

PREPARATION
1) Make sure that the following parts are in good order.

* Battery
* Ignition system
* Engine oil and coolant levels
* Fuses
* ECM harness connector
* Vacuum hoses
* Air intake system
* (Oil filler cap, oil level gauge, etc.)
* Fuel pressure
* Engine compression
* EGR valve operation (If so equipped)
* Throttle valve
* Evaporative emission system

2) On air conditioner equipped models, checks should be carried out while the air conditioner is OFF.
3) On automatic transmission equipped models, when checking idle rpm, ignition timing and mixture ratio,
checks should be carried out while shift lever is in “N” position.
4) When measuring “CO” percentage, insert probe more than 40 cm (15.7 in) into tail pipe.
5) Turn off headlamps, heater blower, rear defogger.
6) Keep front wheels pointed straight ahead.
7) Make the check after the cooling fan has stopped.
