Hey how u doing on those cars it could be running fine with a cracked distributor cap but when water or moisture gets in it will cause it to stall I would check my fire first start with the cap hope this helps you.

sounds to me like you need a new head gasket. top off your coolant overflow bottle. run vehicle as if nothing was happening and in few days check level of coolant in the bottle. OR you can check the cylinders for coolant intrussion by removing all 4 spark plugs in the morning after you use the car the day before. You will most likely find coolant down there. (check to see if the pistons are nice and clean on top / washed by the coolant) I have done a few and have seen a few beeing replaced for the same symptom. RUNS ROUGH FOR FEW SECONDS AFTER START UP. Thats the coolant in cylinder washing the plug down, resulting in misfire until the coolant burnes of inside the cylinder, that's when the car will run OK. Let me know what you find.

SOURCE: Car starts, drive a mile, stalls.

try haviing your alternator checked advance auto parts can check it while its on the car and the can check the battery too. if thats not it it may stall due to a loose battery connection or a loose ground strap. if it stalls and everything turns of (electrical) it may be a connection or ground strap.

SOURCE: 1999 Volvo S70 Stalls at stop signs and traffic lights

These models had a problem with the electronic control modules, and this is what controls the idle speed. Sometimes they just need to be cleaned, but sometimes they are defective. Volvo has extended the warranty on some of them to 10 years or 200,000 miles if it is found to be defective.

SOURCE: My 2002 Nissan Sentra GXE 1.8L stalls when stopped

Ok, 500rpm is too slow for a 4 cylinder car. Should be between 700 and 800rpm. Otherwise it will cut out at traffic lights etc. Can you have someone adjust the idle speed for you? its not a very difficult thing. There is an idle adjsutment screw on the airflow sensor in the engine air intake. It needs to be done in drive, with A/C and lights on. So you will need to hold the brakes on while the adjustment is done.

Why is my car messing up

Obviously its problem with your fuel to air mixture. It is building up unburnt fuel due to not enough oxygen. This lack of enough oxygen will cause the stalls and the build up of gas will cause the backfires. Heat affects the mixture ratio. A number of detector are involved in the exhaust system and any one of them could be failing. Throttle Position Sensors, MAP sensor, Oxygen sensors, catalytic converter, etc. You should be getting the check engine light coming on also. Any auto parts place can read you the code numbers for free. They will provide more specific information about failing parts.

Hello and thank you for using FixYa!

I think you mean the code is engine speed sensor. This is caused by a crank sensor on it's way out. I would have the code double checked by a professional, and have the repairs done to correct this. Cause if it's what I think it is, a crank sensor will leave you stuck.

Thanks Jay!
