It has run fine since we got it. Its on a quarter tank of gas. It started fine, went to back up and the engine shut off. No sound just stopped. Now it makes the starting sound but doesnt sound like its catching. Its just not going. But I can still put it in reverse.
Do you hear the fuel pump running? Do you still have spark? Did any trouble codes appear. I'm pretty sure that it should still be able to shift gears with key on and brake pedal depressed. You can get the trouble codes by turning ignition switch on and off three times. The third time you turn it on, leave it on and watch for codes to appear in the odometer display. I hope this helps.
Have the OBD codes read as will pinpoint the faulty sensor/switch save time and monet searching blind, i'd guess at fuel pump relay but need the OBD code to be sure

Have your transmission oil filter changed;
it is located under the transmission pan
The oil is what makes the transmission shift
When you shut off the engine it stops the transmission pump then when you start up again the transmission shifts until the filter clogs again
SOURCE: will not start
YOUR IMMOBILIZER SYSTEM IS IN LOCKOUT MODE..IF YOU REMOVE IGNITION OFF DRAW FUSE FROM UNDERHOOD FUSEBLOCK,IOD FUSE FOR 10 SECONDS,IT SHOULD RESET THE IMMOBILIZER..IF IT DOES,THE FAULT LIES WITH THE IMMOBILIZER MODULE ITSELF..AS FAR AS I KNOW,THE DEALER IS THE ONLY ONE ABLE TO PROGRAM THE NEW ONE..THE CAR SHOULD START AND RUN AFTER DOING THIS WITH THE FUSE
SOURCE: Car acts like its in neutral when I put it into drive or reverse.
assuming you have checked the trans oil and it is full, it sounds like you need to take it to a good trans shop and have it looked at. it could be something simple or something major and expensive

probably not sounds like either a dead or weak battery or bad connections on the battery posts. first take battery cables loose clean terminals and hook back up hopefully then it will start. or use jumper cables and see if it will jump start. if it jump starts then you no its not starter.if it doesnt jump stsrt then clean posts and cable ends and try again. hope this helps. best of luck
SOURCE: Why won't my car stay running after it ran out of gas
Most newer cars are very sensitive to being ran low on gas. The fuel pump is in the tank and relies on fuel to cool it down. Your fuel pump is now probably not pumping the required pressure for the fuel injection system to work properly (or at all).
