Ignition Switch grey_line.gif Inspect | Test | Replace The ignition switch is usually mounted to the steering column and is operated by a linkage rod.
NOTE On column-mounted ignition switches, don't confuse the switch with the lock cylinder and keys. The ignition switch is not normally visible.
On some vehicles, the steering column support has to be removed and the column lowered to find the ignition switch. On others, the switch is accessible under the dash.

To replace the switch:

  • Remove the ignition switch wiring harness.
  • Unbolt it from its position.
  • Bolt the new switch into position.
  • Attach the witing harness.

SOURCE: my 1981 chevy El Camino V6 3.8L 229 idle gets high

Sounds like a problem with your choke. It may just need to be cleaned (linkages and all). If the choke doesn't close after reaching operating temperature, the engine will rev high. This indicates a choke stuck in the open position. Also, you may need to look for a vacuum leak if cleaning it doesn't fix it. On a 1981 GM product, I'd expect the vacuum hoses to be stiff and cracking.

SOURCE: rewiring 1959 chevy el camino

Are you needing advice, links, tricks, or all of the above?
If it's advice you want:
If you are not buying an after market harness and all of the oem wiring is intact replace one wire at a time from the component all the way back to the fuse box. Its tedious but, it's a sure fire way to get it right the first time.

Secondly, I'd by a haynes manual or some other wiring diagram. Study it for at least a couple weeks or until you are completely comfortable taking on the task.

Color code your wires and label both the old and new ones with paper tape and a permanent marker so that you know what each one is for.

Last but not least, make sure that the battery is disconnected... ;o)

SOURCE: 86 4.3 litre V6 chevy el camino bogging down, stalling out

most likely a weak fuel pump or a clogged filter. Check fuel pressure with a gauge or as its bogging down spray brake cleaner in the Throttle Body. If this allows it to increase RPM then its the pump or filter.

How do I know which 3.8 is in my 1984 El Camio 229 or 231?

3.8L (229 CID)The 229 cid (3,751 cc) engine was first introduced for the 1980 model year and was produced until 1984. This engine replaced the 250 cid in full-size Chevrolets and Camaros as the new base V6. Additionally, the intermediate Chevrolet Malibu and Monte Carlo also used the 229 cid as a replacement for both the 200 cid V6, and the 231 cid Buick V6. Both the Buick V6 and the 229 cid Chevrolet V6 are 90-degree V6 engines, and both are often referred to as the 3.8L V6. These engines should not be confused as being the same, and are completely unique engine designs.
The 229 cid has a 3.736-inch bore and a 3.48-inch stroke, identical to the Chevrolet 305 cid V8 engine. The 229 cid used the same 2.45-inch main bearing and 2.10-inch rod bearing diameters as the 200 cid V6 engine. Also like the 200 cid V6, the 229 cid used the same crankshaft with the 18-degree offset throws and the same 5.7-inch connecting rods with 0.050-inch narrowed ends. It came equipped with 1.84-inch intake valves and 1.50-inch exhaust valves. The 229 cid V6 was only equipped with a 2-barrel carburetor. For 1980 the 229 cid used a mechanical Dualjet. From 1981 to 1984 the electronic Dualjet was used along with the GM's CCC (Computer Command Control) system. The 229 cid was rated between 110 and 115 hp (86 kW).

What is the fuel tank size for a 1986 el camino V6 4.3 F.I.

What size fuel tank????

Well, just for kicks and grins, I checked several parts suppliers catalogs and found that all they provide are 22 gallon tanks, any size engine. The Haynes book DOES NOT provide this info as best I could figure it out. 86 owner bilz
