Service engine light flashes and it idles fast and the temp gauge went up driving A short distance
Check this link, it explains a lot.
Blinking Engine Light Means NOW
A problem has arisen. Scan the computer to see if there is a code stored. Fast idle could be many things but start with the computer scanning. Is it a 4 or 6 cylinder? Temp gauge could be bad or it may have been over heating. Manually check with an IR thermometer. Probably have air in the cooling system. Bleed and check. If you get all of the air out and it still get some in, you have a leak and need to do a pressure test.
Sounds like the vehicle is overheating. Check radiator coolant level first when COLD. The thermostat may be faulty assuming the guage reading went higher than "normal"
Its telling you there's something wrong Tom!!
Look under the hood and do your drivers checks. Is there water in the rad header tank?
Is there oil in the engine?
Is the fan belt in good condition and tight?
When it runs is fluid dripping underneath?
When was it last serviced?
Have a good check around and get back to us.

Its definitly a bad reading, you would know if your vehicle is overheating, you can usually smell it right away.I would say its your temperature gauge sending unit is defective, check the wires to see if they are well connected or broken. ask a backyard mechanic for assistance.

I had the same problem with my 2001 Pontiac Montana and the intake manifold gasket. This is a major problem with these 3.4L engines, if you are in the states I'm pretty sure there is a class action law suite against GM for this. I had my manifold gasket replaced and it was about $1000 CAD. You need to get your vehicle looked at right away as this could cause major engine damage, coolant will leak into the engine and soon enough you will be replacing that too. Good Luck

Hi if the check engine light is still on then the problem is still present you will have to get it scaned find out the fault code and repair that before the check engine light will go out
no you can't jump it to clear the codes it has OBD2 to clear the code you need a scan tool
hope this helps you

The service light means something is wrong with the car and it needs attention now. Get the codes checked and that will tell you what is wrong with it.

i had that problem once. when i got under half a tank of gas in the tank. What i did was i dumped one bottle of gas line deicer in the tank and i have never had it agian. you may have some water in the tank. from condasation or i have a stong feeling i got my water from the gas station. i was using the same station all the time. so i tryed another gas station and so far no more rough idleing which was caused by the water i think and i am getting better fuel milage to. i hope this helps.
