Try to check the battery voltage with the engine running. Should be at least 13.6V from the alternator to charge the battery enough.

Check to see that the trunk light and glove compartment light actually turn OFF when the trunk and glove box doors are closed. Also, if one of the diodes on the alternator has failed, it may still test "good." With the car sitting, ignition off, fully-charged battery, check to see if the back of the alternator is HOT. If it is HOT, replace the alternator.

SOURCE: 1999 Plymouth voyager brand new battery.

Alternator must have about 14 volts running under load and 90 or 130 amps according to which alt. you have.

1998 Breeze will not hold charge

Pete,

Many auto parts stores will check your battery for you free of charge (no pun intended). You may have a failing charging system or dead cell in the battery - or both. With the car running just above idle, and all electric accessories off - you should be able to read 13.5 VDC or more on the battery terminals. Good luck!

Battery goes dead after 3hrs turn off key

The battery is weak and the alarm and other system is trickling out the little charge the battery can hold where it gets below a certain point that it will start the car or there is a short in the system.
You could check this by pulling out the fuses one by one to see which system is draining the power but this could be time consuming and there may be several such as the alarm, the radio, and more. If you have an amp that is staying on this will kill a battery fast, even the radio.
The alternator could be weak so one would need to test this to see the voltage from the alternator when running but i really don't suspect it.
A corroded battery post terminal will reduce cranking voltage by 80 percent.
One way to test an alternator typically is when the vehicle is running place a wrench on the back and if it is magnetized (it pulls the wrench to the alternator) then the alternator is charging. Not certain this works on all but is typical of Chev.
Look at charging up a dead battery with fake salt on youtube perhaps.
Dont pay for any more batteries.

East Coast Canada Rocks!!!
Good luck.

I have a 2003 ford focus wagon second hand. My battery died out and I thought the alternator was the problem. Brought my car to an alternator repair shop and they said the alternator is still good. I ended...

Lead acid batteries don't like being discharged flat, and it could now be damaged and unable to hold a charge. It does sound as though the voltage regulator part of the alternator is allowing discharge to ground when it should not. You would seem to have a good warranty claim on the battery given they did check the alternator and pronounce it OK.

Battery is dead bought a new one still wont stay charged, is it the alternator ? my husband thinks there may an electrical issue

If the car does not run with a batterie in it than it is the alternator. test by uhooking the batterie while car is running, Remove the negative cable ( BLACK ). if it stops running than you have a bad alternator, Which means you husband and you are both correct.

The battery does not hold a charge

Check the voltage output of the alternator. 12 to 14 volts is good. Also check battery cables, clean corrosion, good ground, and bolts are tight. Then replace battery.

Battery wont hold a charge overnight but starts right away with a jump or battery charger and runs throughout the day

sounds like the electrolyte levels in your battery are extremely low which will cause it to not hold a charge except over the day when the alternator is constantly recharging it, ask a mechanic to either top it up or buy a new battery
