You may omit the compressor with a shorter belt of you can find one. just make sure the rest of the pulleys are working especially the water pump and power steering.

SOURCE: 1998 Chrysler Town Country 3.8L Does it Have Timing Belt Or Chain

your engine does have a timing chain, these are very durable, there is no set maintenence interval for them. you can tell how much chain slack you have by gabbing your crankshaft pulley with both hands and rotating it back and forth to feel the chain tightening, it should be a minimul amount of rotation. you should get well over 200k mi. of service without worry. i hope this answers your questions, or at least sets your mind at ease.

SOURCE: how to change serpentine belt

There is a youtube video that shows how to change the serpentine belt/tensioner/idler, but on my 2005, the tensioner looks OEM and doe snot have a squared off end to easily use a wrench to turn.

I think I have a sepentine tool (flat with square 3/8's drive) I can use to turn the tensioner.

Can i use a shorter serpentine belt to bypass ac

Hi Terry, I'm glad to help. Terry, I have actually done this before on one of my personal vehicles while waiting for the A/C Compressor that was ordered. It is very hard to get the right size but it can be done. I would diffinently drive it to the parts store to do it because it will take you a few try's unless they have the option in their computer for your vehicle without A/C. But, Yes you can! Hope this helps and have an awesome day Terry!

Can i replace the serpentine belt with a shorter one

sometimes you can bypass the ac with another type of belt sometimes you can call autoparts and ask for a vbelt for a none ac model sutch as yours if not then a smaller belt will do but you can go through 20 to 30 before find the right one so ask for your model of car without ac to see if exsists

Is there anyway to bypass the AC with a shorter serpentine belt

Dorman Products makes a special bracket & idler pulley assembly for most popular American vehicles like yours. It is installed so that you can remove a seized A/C compressor. Check with your local auto parts stores to see if Dorman has this for your vehicle. It's called an Air Conditioning Compressor Delete Kit. See

Is there anyway to bypass the AC with a smaller serpentine belt?

Yes there is several ways the diagram for bypass should be under hood on the fan shroud now if not there then the belt should minus diameter of ac fly wheel

now some engines dont have the belt bypass now this is when you have to google bypass pulley for your vehicle its not hard to put on there only around 30 dollars online had a van in same way two weeks later my engines pulley was being sold up to then my engine didnt have the bypass system for belt cause the mechanic who put engine in put the alternator and ac on the wrong sides so i sold my van then as i said two weeks later found the pulley

its easy diy for bypass pulley remove ac and put pulley in its place same bolts and pattern

Trying to eliminate a/c compressor need size of belt once i remove compressor

Call the auto parts store and tell them you are doing that.
They can look it up on their computor with ac or without ac, and get the right belt.
Some vehilces don't have a listing for no ac and can't be bypassed.
