It sounds like the transfer case is in neutral good test start truck place trans in reverse slowly try to place back in park if it makes any noise then the output shaft of transmission is turning then problem is in transfer case move that lever back & forth several times this might get it working again

1996 Suburban K1500, gear grinding noise on acceleration, 2 wheel high only

Hi Alex W, chevy k1500 A/T box? 4L80? sure 4wd,
get it checked out in a real shop?
we can not do the checks here, nor hear it
we would use and electronics, stethoscope to find
it zero risk to human body.
not told you, will it grind, parked , and makes noise
in all PRNDL selections, 2H mode.
or shift to 4wd neutral does it make noise"
my guess is only moving it makes noise!?
if yes tests can be dangerous to the tech and others.
is transfer case NP208 transfer case?
see this N here/
we can shift to N to see of noise ends.
a loose chain in the box below can make noise for sure using 4wd on dry pavement.

NI is for towing mode, see in the users guide. yours.

the rod you mentioned is called linkage, yes it's posible, snow may have jammed up under the car and is stopping it from properly engageing, or the grinding could be internal in the transmition, jack the car up, put jack stands under the frame, block the tiers, and take a real good look at were the linckage conects to the tranny, good luck

1990 GMC Sierra 4x4 1500

the connections near the front axle that activate the motor to engage the system aren't melted? That's a comon problem for that body style. If there good, sounds like it could be that motor itself. To figure out if it's you motor or transfercase, jack up the rear end, have a friend inside shift into 4 wheel drive, or try to, and put it in gear and apply some gas. If the front driveshaft is turning then it's something with the front end. If not, farther back in the system.
