My sunfire has same problem. Also when it doesn't start the fuel pump relay buzzes.
I replaced fuel filter with better fuel flow after, but engine shut down twice since then. I am going after the fuel pump next, however I think the tank has to be dropped to get to the fuel pump. If this is the case I'm wondering if I have the skill and stuff to do it.
Also when relay for fuel pump swapped with relay for starter (same relay) the problem does not switch to starter. So I assume relay is ok.

I'd want to check voltage and ground for fuel pump relay. The load side of relay is the line with arrowhead, when relay is energized that line with arrowhead moves to other terminal and sends voltage to fuel pump on gray wire. The control side of relay is that coil symbol, it has to have voltage and ground, the voltage comes from pcm, the ground is a chassis ground. The voltage for load side of relay is fuse protected, fp/inj fuse.

You might not need a tumble, the sys is controled by the key, and transponder, and the ecm. Most auto locks smiths can come out and check the system, might just need a key re-programed

There are several engines that will fit the 2.2l Ecotec, 2.4L high out put motor, and I have actually seen a chevy cavalier that has a 3800 V6 in it if you want to go all out but in most cases sticking with the ecotec motor or the 2.4 High Out Put motor would be best they are two of the best motors for these cars and since the Sunfire is basically the same car as the cavalier almost any thing motor wise is inner change able between cars depending on the motors i own an 2004 chevy cavalier LS sport and a buddy of myn has a 2004 Pontiac Sunfire and both have the 2.2L Ecotec and are both Manual trans and even most of the interior parts are the same except for some of the dash board components hope this helps you out

It will fit but your going to have to do a lot of engine management retrofit to have your engine run right unless you have the ECM for the engine also. Good luck and hope this helps.
