This is a code relative to shift solenoid malfunctions in your computer. This is a known problem on your model and Toyota released an updated PCM to correct the problem.
While you can replace the PCM yourself if you are out of warranty, your dealer will need to code your VIN to it in order to get rid of the check engine light.
The warranty coverage is 8 years or 80,000 miles from new.
The details of the bulletin are below:
TRANSMISSION & CLUTCH
TC015-07 Title:
HARSH SHIFT AND M.I.L. "ON"
DTC P2716 Models:
'05 - '07 Corolla & Matrix (1ZZ-FE) September 20, 2007
TSB UPDATE NOTICE:The information contained in this TSB supercedes TSB No. TC014-06.
TSB No. TCO14-06 is now obsolete and should be discarded. Introduction
Some 2005 - 2007 model year Corolla and Matrix vehicles equipped with an automatic transaxle may exhibit a harsh shift condition and a M.l.L. ON" with DTC P2716 stored. Improvements have been made to the Engine Control Module (ECM) (SAE term:
Powertrain Control Module/PCM) to reduce the possibility of this condition occurring
P2716 -Pressure Control Solenoid "D" Electrical (Shift
Solenoid Valve SLT)
Trouble Area:
1. Open or short in shift solenoid valve SLT circuit. (repair harness wiring)
2. Shift solenoid valve SLT defective. (replace)
3. ECM defective. (replace with a good known one)
Unfortunately a P2716 code is a code for the pressure control solenoid inside the automatic transaxle, my suggestion to you is to take it to your local Toyota dealer where they will be able to monitor the shift solenoids within the transaxle.
Hope this helps.... DTC P2716 PRESSURE CONTROL SOLENOID "D" ELECTRICAL
This is very common on Matrix/Corollas and is repairable by way of
replacement PCM to correct invalid parameters. the labor is low but the
part is very expensive.
Expect approximately $89 or less in labor, and $648 for the new PCM

2005 - 2007 model year Corolla and Matrix (2WD) vehicles equipped with the 1ZZ-FE engine. Warranty Information
Applicable Warranty*:
This repair is covered under the Toyota Federal Emissions Warranty.
This warranty is in effect for 96 months or 80,000 miles, whichever
occurs first, from the vehicle's in-service date.
There is currently a recall going on for this problem. You can likely get your money back on the prior repairs as well. See this link http://www.toyota.com/recall/corolla-matrix.html. On the left-hand side, you can click to take you to put in your VIN and see if your vehicle is included. My 2007 vehicle IS included, and I just had the check engine light come on and have been experiencing rough shifting for about 6 months. When the light came on yesterday, it was extremely rough jerky shifting. The light went off today. Took it to Autozone and got same code P2716. Toyota has assigned me a case number, but I won't get a call back until Monday or by close of biz on Tuesday. This problem can cause your car to not start, or to shut down while driving. YIKES! The person I talked to at Toyota acted a little too nonchalant about the whole deal. Telling me to just wait for the call that I will get. She said most dealers would not have the part needed to fix this. According to what I have read. That is the reason why Toyota is not sending out the notification letters to the affected parties until mid-September. Check out all the info and good luck. I am a little bit p.o'd about this right now. - Natalie
