2.8 Diesel Pajero Cold start

I have had the same problem for a few years on my 1997 Pajero (160km - I've had it from new). Only occurs during cold weather, no problems at all in summer. Problem can be overcome by pumping the primer on the fuel filter for a few minutes until motor has warmed up. I replaced all the rubber fuel lines between filter and diesel pump and fuel tank. This made a big improvement but not cured. I have been told it is the seal in the diesel pump (expensive to fix), but I don't understand why it only occurs for such a short time during the cold weather so have been putting off doing this. Motor runs perfectly in all other respects

Cold start and cut out after short run

i replaced my fuel pump seal car has not cut out since but still has cold start problem in that it runs lumpy for a short period untill warmed up other than that it runs fine been all over the uk in it without a flicker
i never had lumpy start problems during warmer weather
suggest check fuel lines from tank forward to fuel pump

cold start lumpy idle only as weather has gone colder
had cut out once but has not cut out since new fuel pump seal fitted but still ran lumpy just at start up.
very cold morning and snow now it wont start
fitted new ngk plugs still wont start
got to fit none return valve, inline fuel filter, clear fuel pipe to see fuel and any air bubbles also to clean and check EGR valve and check and replace the glow plug relay as i suspect it aint getting power to plugs or not enough also need to get cold start device on side of fuel pump checked one statement a guy posted says his started ok when moved this manually
i know i also have to replace the fuel pipes in the sender drill out and replace with stainless steel ones use baulk head fittings to go through tank.
ps batterys had over 12v and turned over no problem.
to sum it up i suspect in order:
glow plug relay or bad connections (modify if faulty with hot start switch)
cold start valve device on side of fuel pump (but i have no info as yet on these)
ERG valve needs cleaning or blanking off?
fuel pipes drawing in air from a rusty pipe or bad connection?

My pajero 2.8 turbo rattles when cold OK when hot

replace the injector tips as they are squirting and not atomising. They will also be dribbling and that is allowing fuel in before the injection time

Hi there, I`ve got a problem with cold start my Volvo, MY 2003, D5, 2.4 Turbo Diesel. After overnight parking, outside temp. is 10C or less engine wont start - when I`m warming up temp. sensor by...

Sounds like a faulty injector, had the same problem about 2 years ago cost over £1500 to have new injectors fitted.

It might be worth trying some redex or similar cleaning product incase its just blocked.

Turbo diesel, cranks but does not start when it is cold.

Have the cold start valve replaced, it enriches the fuel mix during cold start and check the glow plugs and see if any are bad, to test remove the wires and put test meter to ohms and one by one test each glow plug with one probe to ground and one on the tip of the glow plug see it it goes close to zero if it does not move then that glow plug is bad, replace all that you find bad.
