Just bought my daughter a 2000 mercury mountaneer which has a Ford 5.0 motor. We were driving and noticed the temp gauge shot up to high and vehicle started to overheat. Put Radiator fluid in and noticed it was coming out as fast as I put it in. Replaced the Radiator and now truck is running rough, still smoking, and it wont stay started. I was told it has a blown head gasket, and was wondering how hard it is to replace. Afraid to bring it to a mechanic knowing that a lot of them raise the prices or the issues when its a woman, so want to try and replace it myself but not sure how difficult it is to do.
Very difficult for a beginner
to start with , if it is a head gasket , the proper fix will require that the head be machined flat again to be effective in a good repair
you have made a lot of assumptions so now you need to get some facts
have a compression test done to determine if it a head gasket or cracked head
have the fault codes read to see if the problem is electronic or injector related
lastly only use accredited professional service centers that have experience on your maske of vehicle as they are bound by a code of ethics and a requirement to use only fully qualified mechanics and get quotes first
if you do the compression test and the fault code reading, that will give you knowledge to question any statements regarding "new motor " or other sayings that would indicate a gender bias and may just stop you getting ripped off

I proceed with cauation when advising the owner to repair when they have never repaired before. Yes, your problem may very well be a thermostat, but it could also be a blown head gasket.
With the engine running, check the tail pipe to see if there are any water dropplets coming out. if there is, it is A good sign of a blown head gasket.
Replacing a thermostat is not a simple as one would think. Even before changing a thermostat or anything for that matter, you need to have a pressure test done on the cooling system. This is a small pump that one attaches to the radiator and applies pressure to the cooling system to see if there are any leaks.
I would recommend this. Take you van to an independent repair shop and talk to the manager and tell him that you want a correct diagnosis first, even if you have to pay for it. Many shops will diagnosis the problem and charge you a standard fee. It is then up to you to decide what you want to do from there.
Remember, the correct approach to any problem is a correct diagnosis.
Do not tell the shop owner what you think is the problem or what you think should be changed. Just tell them how it acts and then let them earn their money, but above all, emphazise the fact that all you want is a diagnosis.

SOURCE: 1994 Cougar XR7 Engine idling rough and running rough at low and
Not saying this for sure, but I had the same problem, and i have a 1994 xr7 V6 3.8 L , and all u need to do is set the idle down manually because your computer could have seen that the injector was stuck open, and tried to turn up idle to keep up with the amount of fuel being pumped, worth a shot :P

Have it rescanned and see if it is the same code. What engine do you have?
SOURCE: 1999 mercury cougar 2.5 still runs hot . 240 .
OK, that is getting kind of hot. I would check that the fan is turning on when it reaches normal operating temperature.
Recently, I had to replace both fans, the relays, and the relay contacts on the harness to fix a similar problem on a 1997 Cadillac Deville Limousine.
The heat got tot he relays and messed things up.
Hope you can fix your overheating problem like I did.
