Hi,all the alternators job is,is to charge the battery,so the alternator has nothing to do with it not starting.now if your battery keeps draining down and you have to recharge it every couple of days, then it would be the alternator that was bad.but if you have a fully charged battery and it still wont start, its another problem! does it turn over and try to start but not start?? or when you turn the key over does it just go click-click-click?? or does it just not make any noise at all when you turn the key over?? it makes a big diffrence which of the three its doing, let me know which one its doing, also you can take your battery to auto-zone and they will load test to see if its holding a charge ok.....just let me know.......yz-maniac.

SOURCE: i was having problems with

I have worked on quite a few chevys and can tell you what I've found to work with this type of problem. When you replaced the starter, did you tug on the fusable links that connect to the solenoid to see if one of them was burned and loosing power? There are two or three short pieces of fusable link attached to wires that power the fuse block and other electrical circuits at the solenoid / battery cable connection that will stretch when you pull on them if they are bad. If they are, then you won't have power for the fuel pump, relays and other circuits to make the truck start.
If one is bad, cut the wire behind the link connection and put a **** splice and piece of wire on it with a ring terminal, and connect it to the solenoid. Turn on the ignition and listen for the fuel pump to buzz. The fuel pump is controled by the ECM and makes the pump turn on for 3 seconds to prime the system with fuel before starting the engine. One of the wires on the solenoid with a fusable link does this. If this works, your done.
If the truck won't crank when you try to start it, check the "S" terminal for power with a test light while someone turns the key. The "S" terminal on the solenoid comes from the ignition switch, to the neutral/backup / clutch switch to the starter. You'll have to check every point in between these for power to locate the problem. One bad connection or part will keep the starter from getting power to the "S" terminal. You can use a screw driver to test if the starter is working by touching the two terminals together.
While your under the truck, look at all the wires in the harness for any chafing or rubing, I once found a wire that rubbed through and was causing the problem.
Hope this helps, Craig

If the fuel pump is new then it could just be your fuel filter which is a cheap fix so id try that first. Or it could be your fuel injectors.

SOURCE: My 2001 mitsubishi galant will

I am assuming when you are saying that the vehicle will not turn over, that you mean that it will not start. There is a valve on the fuel rail, which is how the fuel is delivered to the injectors, that looks similar to the valve stem on your tire, this is called a schrader valve. You need to loosen the stem in the valve, and the turn the ignition on and off several times to pressurize the fuel rail. When you start to get fuel out of the schrader valve, you will tighten the stem in the valve. Then your car should start. If you meant that your car will not turn over, as in the starter not engaging, then you need to check your starter relay.

Cheque for disconnected vacuum hoses. sometimes this happen after working around the engine, if everything looks good, start the engine press down the accelerator pedal keep the engine running about 2500 rpm for 3 minutes then let the engine idle, if the engine idle this means you need a new idle speed control motor, if the engine still dies most probable the fuel pump it's going out if you have a code reader it's possible you have some codes and this can give a good direction

2002 CHEVY MALIBU TURNOVER....BUT SOMETIMES WONT START

I just have one suggestion, after what all your mechanic already did. I would want to know the fuel pressure reading WHEN IT WON'T START. So you would need a fuel pressure gauge handy, for that time it won't start. Hook up the gauge and turn the key on- if at 59 psi, when the engine won't start, then you know the fuel pump and the relay sensor is not the problem. And so probably not a fuel problem, although you haven't checked the injector circuit, but likely that wouldn't exhibit a problem as you have.
So if not a fuel problem, check for spark when it won't start. Maybe the problem is in the ignition system. Buy a spark tester from a parts store, use it when the **** engine won't start- simple and easy check of your ignition system.

Car issues

WHAT CONDITION ARE YOUR BATTERY CABLES ? THEY MAY SEEM OK, BUT SOMETIMES REPLACEMENT IS NECESSARY ! BATTERY TERMINALS MUST BE CLEANED, SMEAR SOME VASOLINE ON TERMINALS BEFORE MOUNTING THEM, BESURE TERMINALS ARE TIGHT !!! THE (NEGATIVE) CABLE OR GROUND IS VERY IMPORTANT ! A GOOD CONNECTION IS PARAMOUNT !!! INSPECT STARTER/SOLONOID CONNECTIONS, THEY MUST BE CLEAN, PROPERLY CONNECTED , TIGHT !!! TIGHT IS TIGHT, TOO TIGHT IS BROKE !!! MAKE SURE BATTERY IS IN GOOD,CLEAN CONDITION, FULLY CHARGED !!! YOU DID REPLACE THE STARTER WITH A NEW SOLONOID I HOPE ! ITS THIS ELECTRO-MAGNET THAT INGAGES THE STARTER INTO THE FLYWHEEL TO CRANK THE ENGINE . THEY WORK TOGETHER ! TAPPING ON THE STARTER TELLS ME, POSSIBLE LOOSE CONNECTION, EITHER INSIDE OR OUTSIDE SOLONOID . ALTERNATOR PROBLEM ? TAKE TO AUTOPARTS STORE, HAVE THEM CHECK BOTH THE BATTERY & ALTERNATOR . ITS FREE ! CHECK THE ALTERNATOR BELT FOR WEAR, WHETHER ITS TIGHT, LOOSE, ETC., A WORN OR LOOSE BELT WILL SLIP, NOT ALLOWING THE ALTERNATOR TO DO ITS JOB, CHARGING THE BATTERY !!! ONE MORE THING, ITS IMPORTANT TO KEEP THE ENGINE TUNED-UP, ESPECIALLY BOTH AIR & FUEL FILTERS, SPARK PLUGS & PLUG WIRES SHOULD BE REPLACED AS WELL, THEY DO WEAR OUT !!! DISTRIBUTOR CAP & ROTOR NEED ATTENTION ALSO, REPLACE THEM ! BACK TOO YOUR SRARTER/SOLONOID, SOMETIMES EVEN NEW ELECTRICAL PARTS GO BAD, IT HAPPENS ALOT, THEY COME FROM MEXICO, CHINA, ETC., NEED I SAY MORE ???

2001 Chevrolet Malibu cranks but will not start and is also draining my battery have checked the fuses and filters and battery so far nothing can anyone help me?

the motor is cranking. that tells us you have a good starter and battery. now we need to see if the fuel pump works and if you have spark. what you need to do is turn the key to the start position and see if you hear a buzzing noise from the gas tank. if you hear a buzzing noise the pump is good. have to see if you have spark. is the check engine light on

2002 chevy malibu won't start

Does the starter make any noise or click when you turn the key to start? If it does not, chk. battery could be bad, and battery cables could be loose or corroded. If there good and clean and battery is good try tapping starter see if it will turn and start if it does or still clicks starter bad. It could be ignition switch if it does nothing at all, but if it clicks most likely its starter.

Hi there,

Here's the deal. If it was the starter then the starter would not turn over the engine when you turn the ignition key - so if the engine is cranking well then that's good and you can forget the starter.

As for the Alternator, as you know, the alternator is a generator that runs off the engine. so when the engine is running you can use that generator to power your electrics and to recharge your battery that has been used to get the engine going in the first place. If the Alternator of the regulator on the alternator (Regulator determines what level of voltage is applied to your electronics circuitry from the generator to prevent over charging the battery and cooking it , and also to prevent having too many volts on your electronic components and blowing something up) but either way the alternator is not used during the engine start up sequence. Until the engine is going you are really only using the battery. So if your battery is really good at the time when your starting you don't have to worry about the Alternator either.

The things that are in play for starting are the starter motor to crank the engine, the timing of the engine set up to ensure the valves are opening and shuting at the right time to let fuel air mixture in and exahust gases out, the Computer system and sensors on the crank and the cam shaft position sensor so the computer can work the fuel injectors, and the spark plugs at the correct time to get the engine going, the fuel pump to ensure you have fuel pressure and the coils to make sure they are generating enough voltage to make the spark jump across the spark plug gap.

If you had to pump the gas last time it may be that the fuel pump is starting to play up , but its a case of working through these components to see what is not happening at the right time.

Do you have any check engine lights on ? that would tell you if the computer is having issues with the sensors. If yes you should go to an Autozone or some where where they offer free On board Diagnostic testing (ODB II checks) to tell you what codes the computer is complaining about at least and that may give you a hint on the road to a fix.

Hope that helps but its definately not the Alternator or starter if the engine turns and if your battery is good.
