Is there a history of pontiac grand ams motors not shutting down entirely when turned off?

My sisters grand am will run fine, but when she shuts off the car it still sounds like its running. it sounds louder than just a fan going.... i dont understand why it would still keep running when the key is turned off and out of the ignition. any ideas?

SOURCE: Fan runs after car shut off

You may need to replace your thermostat. This is normal for the fan to run after you turn your car off but if you say its running for 20 minutes or longer, it may mean your thermostat is stuck and causing the fan to run longer to cool off the radiator. Its a good thing for the fan to run. Heat is your enemy. I rather the fan run than no fan at all, if your car overheats, you could blow a gasket or warp your valves and its really pricey if that happens

SOURCE: starts and runs 3-5 seconds and shuts down

Sounds like your security system is shutting the car down. You should be able to leave the key on for 15 minutes and it will reset itself. Make sure you are using factory keys, and they are in good condition.

I have a 97 grand am 3100 v6. when engine is cold it starts and runs fine until i shut it off then it wont start until it cools off. the fuel pump wont work until engine cools off. then it will start and...

I know this sounds silly but Replace the crankshaft position sensor. My guess is it will start shutting itself off soon and restarting when it cools off. I think its just giving you a warning lol.

1998 Pontiac Grand Prix shuts down in Drive or Reverse

When you remove your vehicle from park, the idle air control valve (electronic choke) operates to keep enough air going into the motor while you aren't using the throttle so it will stay running. If it is too dirty it can't move properly...you'll stall.
Pull out and clean or replace the idle air control valve.
