Non starting engine, rapid clicking noise

I tried to start my 2003 Saab 9-5 estate for a family day out this morning and rather than the engine starting, there was just a rapid clicking (like machine gun fire). The battery works as the lights work, the indicators don't (that may be because the engine won't start), the horn works too. Is this a battery problem, an alternator problem or a starter motor problem? Or is it something else?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Cheers

Mike

Mike, From your description of the problem, and given that the car was, prior to this attempted start, working properly, it soinds like you are not getting enough power to your starter solenoid to fully engage, thus the click. Start by checking your connections at the battery, make sure they are clean and tight, I would suggest you disconnect and clean thououghly with a wire terminal brush. Water and baking soda will help dissipate the acid build up. You may then spray the connections with a contact spray, (from your local auto parts store), then reconnect. Also if you think the battery is weak, you could try a boost when you attempt to re-crank. Your connection at the solenoid should also be checked and cleaned, although the problem is likely at the battery. Remember, it takes a lot more amps to engage the starter and spin your engine, than to turn on the lights and blow your horn. If this works, you should have your charging system checked for output..usually free at advance or autozone. The corrosion at the terminals works both ways, not only can it keep your car from cranking, it can impede charging of your battery as well. Hope this is helpful.

It's sounds like you have low voltage, this would allow for the lights to come on but no enough power to run the starter the battery might be bad or low from a bad alternator, either way you need to get the battery checked and your electrical charging system diagnosed for a specific repair. Most parts stores do this free of charge but you have to get the battery and the vehicle there first. I recommend you jump-start the vehicle and drive it straight to a store that performs this checks.

Engine wouldn't start.....

Sounds to me like the car immobiliser. I have a similar issue no reason why it does it and no regular times it does it. You could always have the immobiliser deactivated if it is causing you lots of problems.

When it happens to me, I sit in the car, lock and unlock the car 3 or 4 times whilst inside and usually that frees it up and it will start.

Saab 9-5 Aero Wagon 2000 wont restart when warm or after running

I have a 1999 Saab 9-5. I had a similiar problem. The car would always run cold. It would get hot and the engine would quit. It could be anywhere. One mile from start to 50 miles from start. Once it cooled down it would re-start but the cool down time was always different. Only difference for me was my car would crank, just not run. Replaced the crank position sensor ($60), no more problems! Good luck!

When i start the engine make noise for few seconds

It sounds like you need to check and replace your engine oil and oil filter. This will happen when it is cold and dirty and it takes time to get to the oil ports in the engine. I hope this helps. Don't forget to rate my answer. Thanks.
