Just fill it up 1/4 full with coolent. Coolent expands when hot, which will fill the tank up more, so don't over fill too much. If you think your low on coolent, let the engine cool down, and open the radiator cap and fill it full from there. Filling the tank, will not add ANY coolent to the radiator untill it warms up (expands) and cools down (contracts pulling in coolent from the tank only at this moment.)
why do you keep filling it up? If you overfill either the radiator or the reservoir it is as bad as not filling up... Is there a temperature issue? If the reservoir is NOT using, or appearing to 'use' any coolant.. then that is a good thing.. it IS a reserve tank, a reservoir.. tank for overspill and should never be more than 1/3 full..
Check for oil in the coolent and coolent in the oil, both of these are usually caused by head gasket failare but not always. If these seem ok change the fuel filters, remember there are 3 on these trucks, check the air filter isnt blocked if your not sure leave it out as there expensive and you dont want to throw money away if its not needed yet. Once your sure you have fixed the truck re-fit or replace the air filter. Check the fuel tank for contaminated fuel and if possable check fuel pick up in tank isnt blocked, also try with fuel tank cap removed as the breather may be blocked.
Yes, use a pressure tester to see where the coolant is coming out of under 15 psi pressure when applied at the radiator cap.
If the car smokes white smoke upon starting after the pressure test, then water is getting into the cylinders and evaporating that way, rather than showing up on the ground.
Most likely have a coolant leak somewhere. Could be the radiator, hoses, coolant reservoir, water pump. Get it resolved asap, wouldn't want to pull over to have your car rolling in it's coolant..
u say only somtimes smokes out the tail pipe it could be the oil cooler that is the problem, the oil cooler cools the oil using coolant and when the seals perish the oil and coolant mix,is it over heating?
You need to check the oil with the dipstick (wipe in down a few times) to see if it looks like a chockalate milk shake. If coolent has made its way into the oil you have blown head gasket. The fuel pump which is usually in the gas tank in most gm vehicles would not cause white smoke, if it failed you car would not start because your engine would not get any gas to the injectors
