Cranks but will not start

My car sounds like it will start but won't. I bypassed the security issue already so what else could it be. I replaced the battery and the Alternator is only 2 years old. I also have checked the fuses.

How will I know if this is the problem. I did notice before it would not start at all that it took a second or two two start up.

  • TimC May 04, 2014

if its crankign and wont start, could be a crankshaft position sensor or cam sensor. GM is known for wiring issues and electronic failures. goodluck

The problem might just be a bad ignition control module

If the car cranks ok it's not a battery or alternator issue.remove a sparkplug, attach theplug wire and have someone crank the engine.if you get a spark try this.open your fuel cap,put your ear close to the tank.have someone turn on the ignition you should hear the fuel pump ru n for about two seconds.if you don't it may be your fuel pump.if you didn't get a spark on the first test it's an ignition problem

SOURCE: 2004 Grand Am V6 Will crank but not start in morning only

Check the MAP sensor and the wire harness to the map sensor. Next time it will not start, try disconnecting the MAP sensor and see if it starts. IF it does then change the sensor. Good luck and hope this helps.

SOURCE: Car won't start. Replaced battery. worked 3 days.

if there is no charging then its back to the alternator or the way its hooked up? did you recharge your flat battery with a mains charger after it went flat the first time? as no alternator will charge a battery from flat to fully charged,,,,even if you drove around the world none stop! the new alternator may have given up working becouse you overloaded the voltage regulator trying to recharge a flat battery witch would mean it was very week to start with?

Testimonial: "good information. Thanks. "

Why won't my car start? it just spins but won't crank

If you hear the starter motor turning but it does not engage in the engine then changes are you have either a bad starter gear or solenoid. Either way, you will probably need to remove the starter to find the issue.

99 ranger won't crank, periodically, has anti theft.

I looked at your security system, it is starter motor disable and fuel injectors. You can usually get the starter crank, but, if it is the security system, it still won't start because of fuel injectors. I don't know any way to bypass security system. You can check for applicable trouble codes, if there are any?

I have a 2001 Olds Intrigue that won't start every once in a while. When it won't start the security light flashes so GM told me it was the passcode and I would have to change the ignition switch...

you can not bypass the security in that car, it is built into the main computer, they have problems with the ignition switch screwing up and the only way to start it while the light flashes is to turn the key to ON but don't crank engine, leave on for 10 to 15 minutes until light goes out then start car.

Car was rinning perfect. One day it would not start. there was nothing, no clicking ,bell and guages were working. Jump start was nothing. Installed a new battery there was nothing. Went bact back 2 hours...

It sounds like you have an issue with your PassLock security system. I had the same with my 2002 Impala. Key turns OK, but won't start, won't crank. Wait 20-30 minutes, and car starts normally. There is usually a clue from the Battery and Security lights.
The problem starting to happen once a month, and eventually 1-2 times a week.
There are several write-ups on this problem for several GM cars for 2000-2006(?). Search this website, and search the web.
The official solution is to replace the ignition switch. The best solution is to bypass the Pass Lock system. I went ahead and did a full bypass, which involves cutting wires and adding resistors to the ignition circuit. I have not had a problem since.

Changed starter on 01 montana now van won,t start security lock light on on dashboard tried new battery boosting, still no power coming to starter

It's when the security light starts flashing that the infamous "chip" in the key becomes a nightmare to many. Gradually the car begins not cranking anymore or if it cranks it would start and die in a second. Randomly it will do this more and more often until it won't start anymore. VATS, PASSkey and Passlock immobilizer systems are killing cars all over North America, they have a short lifespan and are certainly more effective against owners than thieves. Here is how you save your car
1st trick, (if not starting) turn the key forward 2 clicks till right before it would normally start, leave like that for 10 minutes. ( no less ) After 10 minutes, turn key back then forward and your car might start. I did this in my regal for more than a year. If its shuting down while running, im sorry i have no quick fix...

Cheap fix: Bypass the chip in your key. Temporary, but effective. Until the TDM (theft deterrent module) in the dash poops out, then you're kinda screwed. I was told that these types of key security systems have a 7-10 year life span. Sucks for us. This link explains the "Key Issue" pretty well.

Never worry again fix: Bypass the whole VATS/Passlock/passkey I or passkey II system entirely. Literally take it out, and throw it away. I just did this in my Regal. Took about an hour. Took longer to find the thing than it did to fix the problem. For a list of cars effected by this problem. See the NEWROCKIES link on the right side of their page......... They sell a unit for 200 bucks to totally bypass this system FOREVER. life time-money back and all that. Finally did this in my car. Well worth the 200 if you've looked into getting this replaced... Anywhere from 600-1000 bucks.

----- With this fix, you can take that whole Vats, passlock, passkey **** system out of your car all together. Good info on both sites
