I have a 98 buick lesabre. When i turned on my blower electrical smoke came out of my defroster. I checked the blower it was not hot or smoking. All my speeds are working on the fan. After it happened I would turn on the blower and my alternator light on dash would pop on. Now a day later it is not doing that.Help!!
Check your blower resistor

Testimonial: "I have not pulled it out yet but all my speeds are working on blower speeds."
I have seen them burn the contacts together. when they get too hot they are supposed to break a built in thermal fuse. but it could have also been a build up dust on itthat burned off because it will generate a little heat.
Could that cause a lot of smoke inside of the car? This morning everything is working no smoke, alternator light not coming on when I turn on the blower.
O yes, if there is a lot of dust and it gets hot enough to burn, it will cause a lot of smoke and it smells burnt. Example. I know its not a car but it proves a point. In Florida the hotel heaters hardly ever run cause they don't need it. I cut the heater on one time and the dust built up on the coils started burning and all you could see was smoke and it even made the smoke detector go off. So yes it can most definitely be bad.
The blower resistor you are talking about is it located next to the blower with two screws and how can I test it ?
It could be but Im not certain its exact location on this vehicle. If you don't have automatic temp. control (digital temp readout) then this is what it looks like on the inside. The way it is supposed to work is it adjust fan spped by the amout of air going over the coils from the fan.
It is less than 25.00 at oreillys.
Ok thanks I will go pull it out and look at it.
If you have automatic temp. control Then you will need this one and it's 179.99
As far as testing them, the first one you can test with an ohm meter by checking across the coils
Looks like that was my problem found burnt, black debri around one of the coils. It has a very strong burnt smell. I checked the coils checked good but I will change anyway. I have the non expensive one lol. Thankyou very much. You were a big help.
You're very much welcome.

the hvac selector switch in the dash may be the problem. You need to remove the switch and look at the connector on the back of switch, see if there are any burnt wires at the connector or switch. It's all electronic and the switches have been known to burn out on this and other model.

I had the same problem with my '87 Buick LeSabre 2 years ago. But it didn't seem to fit right, the car was running fine up until it just didn't. I had 3 professional mechanics swear it was a blown head gasket. I researched thoroughly and found out this particular engine make has a DEFECTIVE upper intake manifold which can break down and cause coolant to leak into oil, simulating a blown head gasket. The NHTSA had issued a recal on SEVERAL GM cars with this engine, EXCEPT for the '97. I filed a complaint with the ODI and as of today it is now COVERED as a "Defect & Recall". NHTSA ID number 96V116000. This MAY be your problem if it is NOT the "usual" blown head gasket. Hope this helps.

It sounds like the air distribution door motor is bad. If you turn the fan speed to low with the ignition on/engine off and try to change the mode to something other than defrost, you should faintly hear a motor running. If its making clicking noises, then it is most likely stripped. This is a fairly common problem with mode door motors. It will have one on each temp door for the dual climate control as well. Those ones usually last longer.
