Idle air control valve was dirty - I cleaned it -> no more dying at stops. Since then whenever I shift to drive from being parked or accelerate from a stop sign first gear is rough and sounds like something large and deep is grinding. When backing up first thing in the morning I put the car in reverse and it makes that loud clunking/chunking sound. Single clunk, but deep within the vehicle like the center. Reverse is rough and car vibrates. Shift into Drive after finished and acceleration is rough through first gear. Recently, after driving through these problems to get to work, my engine has started to take on the strain of a rough first gear/idle and it is now starting to stall at stops sometimes. Reverse is even rougher than ever and it shoots back as if it finally caught the gear and threw it into reverse. Drive runs fine past first gear. First gear at stops still almost stalls engine. Please help because i'm super broke and need my car to get to my jobs >_<

have you ever had the injectors checked. if not try runing some fuel injection cleaners through it and see if that works
SOURCE: 2003 Mitsubishi Outlander died and won't start back up
If it does turn over but won't start, check for fuel and spark, if not spark then check to see if the crank sensor is cover with dirt.....

Have you checked your tranny fluid level, also does it smell burnt or really look brown or milky?

You need to check your Idle Air Control (IAC) that is located on the throttle. When you change your transmission to a forward gear that gives the computer a signal and then the computer gives the IAC the signal in order for it to control the idle as needed, but if the IAC is damaged it wont work properly. I have had this problem in several cars in my shop and the cost of a rebuild IAC with the throttle is about $300, so good luck.
It can be issue
with IAC( idle air control valve) causing the problem.
