Was driving the car and suddenly lost acceleration. the car will still start and idle but the pedal is to the floor and won't go back into it's original position unless you move it manually.
Broken return spring or the throttle cable also possible throttle body arm snapped
Yep, broken cable.
Throttle cable or return spring broke.
Your gas line busted.
Broken throttle cable
I have an 01 Ford Taurus n my gas pedal stuck n could barely get my car to stop. How do I fix this?
The spring or wire that connects your pedal to the throttle body may broken or damaged. Check under your hood and look at the throttle body (it's the carburetor looking thing). There should be a steel wire connected to it coming from the back of the engine bay. It should connect on the side where you'll see a few springs. If nothing looks broken there, turn the part of the throttle body connected to the spring and wire. If it revs up when you move it, then the cable could be broken somewhere between there and the gas pedal.
Alternatively, the linkage on the pedal could have been disconnected some how. Check behind and above the gas pedal to see if eveything is connected properly.

Sounds like when you ran the car out of gas the fuel pump was damaged, these in tank electric fuel pumps are very small and produce allot pressure and volume, the way they do this is to use the gas around them to cool down, when the pump comes out of fuel when the tank is below 1/4 full it starts to get hot very quickly, since your pump was well used (109000 miles) that was the last straw. When you replace the pump also replace the fuel filter.
I would also clean the throttle valve and idle speed control valve, this may be contributing to the low idle complaint, clear the system after the pump and cleaning by disconnecting the battery for a few moments.

i have a 2001 ford taurus and it did the same thing a while back, call the dealer and ask them for the sensor that is behind the brake pedal. It is not the transmission .. cost less that 25 bucks to fix and takes about 20 min
