04 sebring lx 2.4 16 valve dohc. Oil leaked out loose oil filter while driving.While driving the engine slowed and quit.Have the car at home .Engine is not seized added oil ,filter is tight ,just wont start.Spark is kinda of intermittent and not steady like it should be.Have fuel.Is there an auot shutoff to save the engine from seizing and does it need resetting.Car never backfired or made any noises just ran out of oil.

No auto shutoff that I'm aware of. Check cam and crank sensor if you're not getting good spark

try the crankshaft position ensor a common problem it is actually located on the transmission on the backsidea ten millimeter bolt holds it in

SOURCE: New Engine oil pours out from under valve cover...

Hello there. This issue will be the result of a warped vale cover, or a failed valve cover gasket. the more common culprit will most likely be a failed valve cover gasket. You may isolate the problem by removing the cover, and using a level to confirm the cover alignment. If it dose not line up correctly to the head, replace the valve cover. Now, if the cover is ok and not warped, simply, replace the failed valve cover gasket.

when you changed the filter did the rubber seal on the old one stay on the block

It is possible that there is a safety shutoff which would shut the engine down in the event that the computer saw a loss of oil pressure. Tightening the filter and adding the correct amount of oil should correct the problem after several seconds of cranking to restore oil pressure throughout the engine. There may however be a fault code stored in the computer which will need to be reset before the engine can be started again. Sometimes a professional grade scanner is needed to scan the vehicle and reset the codes. Cheaper code readers don't always show everything. If the vehicle has any sort of variable valve timing, it will most likely be controlled by oil pressure and there will be several sensors which can be confused and may cause a no start symptom. In most cases, an engine can run without oil for about 5-10 seconds before damage starts to occur. Spark and fuel present while cranking should definitely allow the engine to start unless there is a major timing issue which would be controlled by the computer. Make sure the cam and crank sensors are in sync with each other.

my guess, is the engine leaks oil and you have tried fix it
odd, you did the hard ones first. why not the valve cover
did you know there are 2 ways to find leaks.
1: clean it , all off, then run it and look. see live leak.
best is to do that with out driving as the wind blows it about.
find it , now you know what leaking.
2: use the UV dye kit.

all base models were made with 1.6L engines. The EX-CX are all SOHC (Honda D engine). The CX, DX, and LX all have D16y7 non-VTEC engines; whereas the EX has a D16y8 VTEC, and the HX has D16y5 VTEC-E. The USDM Si and Canadian SiR came with a DOHC (B16A2 VTEC).

Check the oil filter. The old gasket might be stuck on the engine (two gaskets stuck together), or the new gasket might be defective, misaligned or missing.

It's not suprising that the engine stalled after getting hot considering you had run the engine out of oil as indicated by oil pressure light coming on and needing two quarts to refill it. Now that the oil is replaced, you could keep driving, but it would be wise to investigate why it had got so low on oil in the first place. Refer explanation below. You should check the oil level weekly to ensure it is at the correct level and top up if necessary. For that year vehicle, oil and filter changes should be around the 3,000 mile / 5,000 Km mark.
It sounds like the engine could be using excessive oil by either leaking out or being burnt in the cylinders.. If there is a major leak then there will be oil puddles under the engine after sitting for a while. Excessive oil burning in the cylinders is indicated by grey oil smoke from the exhaust when driving. If engine has oil and grime all over the best way to find the leaks is to get the engine pressure cleaned and then observe where the oil leaks are. The most usual places for older vehicles are the sump and valve cover gaskets followed by crankshaft seals. Oil leaks can also come from a loose oil filter or a faulty warning light pressure switch. If exhaust smoke is excessive then it would indicate worn piston rings and / or valve guides and seals.

99 mazda 626 lx -i have a slow oil leak. only leaks when i drive.
It sounds like it's actually burning the oil, rather than leaking it then, I'm assuming that your usage is a lot more than the drop you mention. The entire car has 234k on it? (or did you mean just the trans?) With that many miles I wouldnt be surprised if your valves are letting a little oil slip into the combustion chamber. If the usage is bad enough, it may be time for a valve job, or even a rebuild.

Oil consumption, rattle, engine noise
Check under the hood and inspect the valve cover gasket. If it's bad it would explain why you don't see any leaks on the ground because it's probably burning off on the manifold. This ticking you're hearing is a lack of lubrication to the rocker arms. Apart from the valve cover gasket, you should get under the car and inspect the oil pan and oil filter for seepage. Leaking oil
Wash the engine at the quarter car wash. Get a dye at the auto parts store that is used to find engine leaks. You add it to the oil. It becomes visable under ultra vilolet light. Get a UV light bulb for your drop light ( not much money, probably at the hardware or autoparts store) and check the engine with the light after driving a short way. The leak will be very obvious and if you do this before the leak has had a chance to migrate all over it should lead you to the problem.
