Alternator belt apply problem



Hi my name is alex and i own a 91 300zx TT and just recently my fan belt that connects to my alternator broke. I took out the radiator and everything but i can't get the belt to fit over the fan pully and the alternator pulley, even after i loosened the alternator and moved it closer. I know its the rite belt I just can't get it to fit. Is there a specific order I'm supposed to do it in? what do you think?

    yes i had moved the bracket and even so im still shy by about 3/4 of an inch. im starting to think its the wrong belt but the guy at car quest told me that it's the rite belt. I definately would pick up a manual but im also short on money. also i would use soapy water but its not close enough to even slide on to. :( Any other posible solutions?

What you do is start from the bottom pulley then work your way to the top pulley with the alternator pulley loosened and moved all the way across and it should go straight on also try some lucricanti.e. soappy water to make it slide on better.

Look for a decal of some kind for the belts. I take it that your probably have V belts, you mentioned moving the alternator bracket. That's your adjustment so with that all in, it should slip right on. Check and see if there is any other adjustment you can make. If all else fails you can go to a local auto parts store and pickup a manual which I'm positive will have a diagram of some sort in it. Hope this helps!

    I looked up your car on oreilly auto parts website. It shows 2 belts for the one your replacing, 40398 and 40400. Your probably need the lil bit bigger one lol. Look on your package, Its most likely a different brand, but the numbers will be the same. :)

1995 nissan maxima alternator replacement


1995-98 Models
  1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
  2. Remove the splash guard on the right side of the vehicle.
  3. Loosen the alternator belt idler pulley.
  4. Slip the drive belt off the alternator pulley.
  5. Remove the four air conditioning compressor mounting bolts.
  6. Remove the radiator fan and fan shroud.
  7. Move the air conditioning compressor forward.
  8. Disconnect the alternator harness connector.
  9. Remove the alternator mounting bolts, and lower the alternator from the vehicle.
To install:
  1. Hold the alternator in place and install the mounting bolts.
  2. Plug in the alternator harness connector.
  3. Move the air conditioning compressor back into location.
  4. Install the radiator cooling fan and shroud.
  5. Install the air conditioning compressor mounting bolts.
  6. Place the drive belt on the alternator pulley.
  7. Tighten the drive belt to the proper tension with the idler pulley.
  8. Install the splash guard.
  9. Connect the negative battery terminal.
Proper belt tension is important. A belt that is too tight may cause alternator bearing failure; one that is too loose will cause a gradual battery discharge and/or belt slippage, resulting in belt breakage from overheating.

Yes the belt runs over the alternator, A/C etc. This page shows how it works, and the tensioner needs to keep tension on the belt to drive the pulleys including the alternator.

Removing altenator on 2004 kia sedona 3.5


These are instructions that I found online. From reading them I am glad I have not yet had to replace the alternator on "MY" Sedona. Hope this helps as the KIA manual does not supply alternator R & R instructions. Good luck.
As for #5 I removed the front wheel and plastic panel when I had to replace "just" the serpentine belts and idler pulley.
1. Remove the terminal connections on the battery. Allow 30 minutes to pass for the airbags to automatically disable.
2. Remove the air filter intake. The air filter intake is the large plastic box above the radiator that is connected to the air filter housing. With the air filter intake removed, you can now remove the support beam above the radiator itself. You will have to use a Phillips screwdriver to remove a total of 10 screws from the support beam.
3. Place the large pan underneath the vehicle right under the radiator. Unplug the two radiator hoses that are connected to the radiator.
4. Remove the pipe that the radiator hoses were connected to. Remove both fans that are attached to the radiator by unscrewing the four screws holding each fan in place. This will allow access to the alternator itself.
5. Remove the serpentine belt by loosening the manual adjustment pulley held in place by two nuts. Use the socket wrench to remove the nuts and then remove the serpentine belt. Remove the support bar that connects the engine block to the alternator. Remove the 2 screws holding the support bar in place to remove it.
6. Remove the three bolts on the left side of the alternator. Disconnect the wire harness to the alternator by squeezing the tabs and pulling it out. Disconnect the hot connector by pulling it out. Pull the alternator out of the vehicle. Place the new alternator into the vehicle and reconnect the hot connector and wire harness to the alternator.
7. Reattach the support bar by reinstalling the two screws. Reattach the serpentine belt into the vehicle and tighten the manual adjustment pulley. Reattach the two nuts holding it into place.
8. Reattach the fans attached to the radiator. Make sure there are four screws for each fan to secure it into place. Reattach the pipe that the radiator hoses were connected to and reconnect the two hoses that were connected to the radiator.
9. Use all ten screws to reattach the black support beam above the radiator. Place the air filter intake back into the vehicle. Reconnect the terminal connections to the battery and close the hood.

both fans do not turn on at the same time. one fan is for the AC condensor and the other is for the radiator. A/C turns on one fan, Radiator temp switch turns on the other one. If you have never replaced the thermostat, or done a radiator flush/refill, you should do one now.

Belts squealing


is your belt slipping? You may have a bad tensioner pulley. Check all pulleys make sure they will spin and not lock up, if they feel really tight or after rotating them around several times they get tight replace

Power stering stopped working radiator overheated


You have a broken fan belt. Put the new one on according to the diagram under the hood. Replenish your radiator overfill reservoir and recheck it until all the air is purged from the system.
