I have had a similar problem with my honda. After doing some research, the distributors will fail and it is common. If you are able to replace the crank sensor that is great. you do not have to do the timing as long as you do not remove the whole distributor. I found it easier to remove and replace the whole distributor. remove the three screws and discconnect the connectors and pull it straight out. the installation is in reverse and the best thing is it will only go in one way. replace the screws and the connectors and your done. But you will have to do the timing. You might have to remove the spark plugs to see if they have fouled out. if they did see if you can clean them or replace.
Thanks
Good Luck

Remove the left front wheel....(drivers side). Remove all accessory belts. Remove the crankshaft shaft pulley.......remove the plastic lower timing belt cover.....and there it is! It is mounted with one bolt.
The wiring runs down the right side of the timing cover while looking at it from the drivers side of the car.
