2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Heater

the heater core is removable from the climate control unit. The climate contriol unit has to be removed to replace it. The A/C system must be evacuated and lines removed as well as the dash, to access the climate control unit. The steam is coming from a leaking heater core.

I have a 1998 Expedition Eddie Bauer 2wd 5.4L. I was driving down the road the other day w/o any air or heat turned on, and a foul smell started coming out of the vents where the ac and heater air come out...

You have a leak in your heate core, located behind the dash on the passenger side. Common problem, I have the same vehicle and had the same problem. Parts not that expensive, but many hours of labor. Dash has to be removed from vehicle!

Should be a central vaccuum block behind your selector for vent defrost etc. perhaps that is going bad. They're expensive for something made of plastic. cheaper alternative is the junk yard.

Steam coming out of vents and water runnind down inside of dash

Your heater core has corroded through. You need a new heater core. You may be able to get by temporarily, with bypassing the heater core hoses, located in the engine compartment. These hoses carry coolant heated from the engine, to the heater core. You remove the hoses from the core, and put a pipe in the middle, connecting the two hoses together using hose clamps.

Should there be a cool morning, or if you need the defroster, you won't have warm air. Just a temporary fix.

2001 Jimmy, ran a little hot and steam was coming out of the window defrost vents, changed the thermostat now steam is really comming out of the window defrost vents. What do we need to do?

You heater core is leaking causing steam to come out of the interior vents. This is quite a process to replace a heater core in one of these cars. The entire dash needs to be removed. The core itself is located under the middle of the dash towards the top. If you do this job yourself, take your time and allow a full weekend to do if you've never done one before.
