2006 buick rainier in park, gears slide but do not engage

My car is in park, I tried putting gear in reverse but the gear just slides but it doesn't change gears. No dashboard lights on at all. About an hour before, I turned the car on and felt a jolt, then drove home without problems. When I tried going out again, that's when I could not make it change gears.

Try pulling the vacuum line off of the EGR valve when the engine is warm and starts to sputter. If it runs good cold and then dies when warm and won't start again until the engine cools it is most likely a bad or sticking EGR valve. Try the procedure to confirm it is the EGR. You can check the internet for location and an image of the EGR valve for your specific car. Please rate me on this answer.

The end of the shift cable has broken, there is a plastic ring at the transmission end of the cable that breaks. You will need to have it towed to the mechanic.

Car won't shift into gear

Broken cable ? Looking under the hood at transmission where shifter cable hooks , moving shifter selector , does the cable move trans detent lever ? If it does the next step would be to hook up a factory or professional scan tool an check internal mode switch input to the PCM/ECM - engine computer . Plus for DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes . Your best bet mite be to have it taken to a qualified repair shop.

Buick automatic transmission linkage

Easy fix, it's your transmission linkeage bushings. They do break because they're plastic. Dorman makes them.
