Why car wont pick up speed when i get to 40mph then jerks and pick up speed

Does it down shift appropriately when accelerating? Normally when you stomp on the gas while in a high gear (travelling at 40mph), the transmission will downshift to a lower gear giving the car much more torque. This can cause the car to jolt or jerk forward and accelerate suddenly.

Downshift and gets stuck in first gear

TCC switch located in the trans axle is more than likely the culprit and needs to be replaced. take this one to a well known transmission shop. shouldn't run you more than a couple hundred dollars.

I am assuming your transmission is a 5speed manual. What is the tachometer reading when you experience this jerking in 5th gear? It sounds like the engine is being lugged. If you are trying to pull a hill or accelerate in 5th gear at less than 40 or 45mph, you need to downshift to a lower gear.

First thing ... pull the dipstick and check the oil. It should be bright pink or red, if it's brown or black and smells bad your oil has never been changed. Drain as much as you can, measure how much came out and replace it with synthetic compatible oil. Start the car and let is run for a few minutes and shift the gears a few times ... then take it for about a 10 mile ride to circulate the oil, stop and go now and then so it will shift through all the gears. You could also add about half a quart of Lucas Transmission Fix.
