The brain is telling you it thinks the engine is due for a service. Mostly this can be ignored if the engine has been serviced but it is reckoned some management systems reduce the power output of the engine if the brain continues thinking it needs a service.
While some service indicators can be reset fairly easily, I seem to remember the BMW needs dedicated diagnostic equipment to reset it.
Push and hold the trip resetter button (near the speedo meter) until you see a message appear. Then push again until you see the info that you want to reset.
