Mazda rx 8 creates a lot of heat, to fix this you must change out the coolant every 20k miles, with the mazda brand coolant i think its called mazda f22 coolant, the engine stays hot due to the high RPM engine, you may want to check: ignition coils, cat, coolant, and do a compression test.

SOURCE: RX8 Melting Cat , Missfire

My car is currently at the dealership with the same issue I think it is the front oxygen sensor not working which caused a lot of heat and the car would not drive more then 2 miles without over heating. I am awaiting diagnostics from Mazda but may get a cat replacement pipe installed with a new sensor.

Replaced Catalytic Conv., Fuel Pressure Reg, Fuel Pressure Sensor, Muffler/exhaust. Cat still gets glowing orange/red. Any help ?

Do a compression check of the engine. You may have a bent or burnt exhaust valve that is letting unburned fuel get into the exhaust stream. It will burn in the cat and that can cause the red glow.

What would cause the cat to glow red hot ? Also shows code p0174

What you have is a rich condition! Your cat is glowing because it is working overtime trying to burn unburt gases. Your vehicle is dumping in too much fuel for one reason or another.

99 Mercury Cougar cat glowing red. Replaced thinking it was plugged and still glowing cherry red with exhaust unhooked.

Im guessing the ck engine light is on? Something is dumping gas and heating up cat, you need to check have scanner hooked up and engine data looked at...look at long and short fuel trim, tis will tell you what's going on or at least give you a direction to go.I wouldn't drive it, gonna ruin new cat

Exhaust glows red next to back box car keeps losin power (1998 renalt laguna petrol 1.8

generally, glowing exhaust is a sign of either the engine being severely retarded, fuel mixture being super lean or the catalytic converter on the exhaust being restricted. Check all. Loosing power can be retarded or restricted cat. I'd check cat first.
