I have a 2002 dodge ram 1500 5.9 my transmission was slipping so I pulled the transmission out had it rebuilt at transmission factory and then I put it back in. Now it won't start. I replaced the crank shaft sensor. It started but now it pops and won't idle right the rpm goes crazy up and down it won't idle the engine it blows out black smoke. I replaced spark plugs and spark plug wires and the whole distributor and coil. Its still doing the same thing. It has a code 1391. What do I do now? I need help this is my only truck.
1391 is "Intermittent loss of CMP or CKP". CMP is the cam position sensor, CKP is the crankshaft sensor. If this problem only started after you did the transmission, it is possibly with the crank sensor. The cam sensor is inside the distributor. It could be in the wiring to the sensors, the electrical connector, or the magnet on the torque converter that the crank sensor gets a signal from. 3 wires: the orange wire is a 5 volt reference signal-check if you have 5 volts with key on. The black wire (blue stripe) is the sensor ground wire. The gray wire is the crank sensor signal. All 3 wires come out of the PCM. Maybe you pinched the wires working on the transmission. Check the connector carefully for bent pins or dirt-spray with CRC brand electronic cleaner or similar. Might as well check the cam sensor at its connector, too. Both sensors share the same orange 5 volt reference wire, and same ground wire-the wires are spliced going to both. If you can't find a problem in the wiring, you may need to check the magnet or whatever it is on the torque converter, that the crank sensor picks up a signal from. Maybe you can see something with the sensor removed, or maybe you have to pull the bell housing back to investigate.
I just read a little more: one fellow had a cracked flex plate and it threw that code- it was cracked right around the hub and threw the sensor signal off. Keep that in mind!
the info was helpful. i figured out what was wrong. The crank shaft sensor needed to be adjusted. now my truck is running fine. thx for the tips.

if truck has a ceramic ballist resistor near and connected to coil this could be problem or the crk posistion sensor could be too, i would change ballast first if you have on your truck appx cost $10

I WOULD SAY IT IS THE COMPUTER {BRAIN} THAT IS WHAT SENDS THE FIREING ORDER AND VOLTAGE AND SETS THE TIMEING SPECK I WOULD SAY CHECK THE COMP

you have pcm problems or ASD relay problems.they both control the fuel and ignition.

then i would replace whats called the hall effect sensor its that black plastic plate you see when you take dist cap off. just pull rotor and lift up the sensor.dist cap is what holds it on.also under the sensor will be a stamped sheet metal piece that looks like the top of a castle wall. make sure its not loose on the shaft.if it is then new dist will be needed
