Usually the rotor button can only be put back on in one direction. Look at the bottom of it there should be a small piece of metal there. Line that piece of metal up with the piece that looks like a a big pin inside.

Firing order and does it comply with the numbers on the distributor cap

not necessarily-- it complies with the position of the rotor button and the lead it points to in the firing order
so start with the rotor button facing no one piston lead with the piston on tdc compression
put the lead to no one plug
move the crank in the direction of rotation and when the rotor button points to another lead that is the next plug to connect to
so with a firing order of 153624 (example) the lead wil be on the point when no one piston is on tdc compression
the next point will be no 5 piston ,the next point will be no 3 plug and so on
work shop manuals are a good source of accurate information

I had the head re-done on my 1994 Mitsubishi Mighty Max truck and after several distributor adjustments it starts and revs good, but when I put the timing light on and connect it to spark plug #1 the...

It appears that you are out in the firing order by 1 plug position in the cap.. I would pull the distributor and place the engine timing mark exactly where I wanted it on compression stroke. turn the distributor shaft until the rotor button was pointing to no 1 cylinder plug lead and refit it there. You may have to turn the shaft back a bit to allow for the turn of the gear as you put it in but ensure that the rotor button points directly to no 1 plug lead contact in the cap. Nip up the adjuster --fix the timing light and check the timing . There may be a slight adjustment to do to get it right.
