Got the oil changed, went to the airport and left the car there for a week. Upon arrival the engine was noticeably louder (knocking). Brought it in and mechanic changed the tensioner but that did not eliminate the abnormal engine knocking noise. He said that maybe the AC compressor from sitting and oil settling is making the noise. Not buying that...Been like this for about a month now with no changes in the noise or the performance of the car. How worried should I be?
If you drove after the oil change, I would kind of rule that out. There are many noises an engine makes and nine are good so you should be concerned about it. Bring it to another guy to check if you're not satisfied with this guy.

Yes you can get a shorter belt and bypass the ac. It may be as simple as going to the parts store and tell them you have 2001 jetta no ac. Just keep the receipt.
You should also disconnect the a/c compressor connectors/wires/plugs also, try doing this before you bypass the ac first incase doing so gives you warning lights on the dash board.
Also know that the defrost setting uses the a/c so it will take longer to get the condensation off the inside of the window.

I have a 2003 Passat GLX V6 and i havent been experiencing this issue, however from my experience with VW, the early 2000 models of the passat that have a 1.8T 4 cylinder engine have a major issue with what has been deemed "oil sludge" you have to be careful with this engine oil wise and make sure to get the oil changed every 3,500 - 4,500 miles and make sure you get the full synthetic oils for it and the proper filters :-) the turbo that is on this model heats up the oil to extreme temperatures and if not serviced regularly you will have problems.... i hope this helps! i would have someone check it again for this issue... hopefully you get to it before it becomes costly!

dead right it is ! the cover has not been resecured properly after changing oil +filter if garage says it waslike this on service why not tell you ?? either way take it back and complain this cover is secured by screws and no excuse for not fitting securely

With the key in the ignition (but not turned), press and hold the Odometer Reset Button on the right hand side of the panel. While still holding that button, turn the key (although not far enough to start the engine) and then press and hold the Minute button on the left side of the instrument pane(if pressing doesnt work try turning the knob clockwise until service light has gone off and skip the pressing)l. Release both buttons at the same time.

Is it actually a/c pump? Remove serpentine belt and run motor. If noise is still there, it will be with the engine. If noise is gone, a/c, p/s, or alternator. I doubt oil settling in a/c pump was cause,highly unlikely.
