try turning the steering wheel a bit. it may be the steering has the steering lock in a bind.
if that dont work wiggle key sideways and in and out a little then have lock cyl replaced
If your a pretty good do it your selfer its not to bad. They are all a bit different. REMOVAL 1st I would rent the pully puller if needed for your app. 2nd Remove the belt from the pully. 3rd Take a pair of long nosed vise grips and crimp the feed line to keep the fluid from draining out of the res. Or plug it. 4th Then the high pressure hose should come off next. Hold it high and try not to let any of the fluid out. It will happen, but try not to. You do NOT want to get any air in the line. 5th Remove 4 or so bolts. REINSTALL 1st make sure you have enough fluid for the job. buy 3 extra bottles just in case. 2nd make sure to prime the new pump and the high pressure line with power steering fluid. Just dump it in the holes before connection. ( also dont forget to change any teflon seals if prompted! You do not want to take it all back apart again.) 3rd Bolt pump back into place.. 4th Install the pully with puller in reverse. 5th refill the res with fluid. After install you may hear some wine for a bit...Its due to the air in the lines and pump. ALL rack and pinion steering IS self bleeding so dont get worried if you got to much air in the lines... Put the front wheels on jacks, take off the res cap and put a wrag over it. Fluid will spirt out all over. Then turn on the SUV and proceed to turn the wheels left all the way to lock,,,then right all the way to lock until ALL the air is out. Make sure to do this for some time! ( like 100 times.) lol! You do not want to be driving down the road and cant steer to well! So do it for a while. Hope this helps...
there is a few ways of doing thes the easiest way being using locking pins
you bont have to go and buy a set of locking pins you can use 3 m8 (13mm headded) bolts and a 5mm allen key
there is a hole in the cam pully and 2 holes in the injection pump pully and 1 in the fly wheel
i suggest you lock the fly wheel up first
the hole is located under the starter motor on the front of the block
insert the 5mm allen key and get someone to turn the crank pully clockwise until allen key engages into the fly wheel
the hole in the cam should be at about 25 past
(if it is at 10 to then you neet to remove the pin from the fly wheel and turn the crank 1 full turn)
when the hole is inthe right place you can insert a m8 bolt and wind it in to the head
with this now lined up you should be able to fit the other 2 m8 bolts into the injector pump pully
with this now done your 1.9 tdi engine is timed up
No diagrams available, but under the power steering pump, over on the right of the motor looking toward the back, there is a bolt 12mm head to the right. It is the tensioner bolt. Loosen the 2 bolts at the very back of the pump, and I think 2 through the pully. It should be easy then.
