I have a 96 for taurus. While driving it starts to choke up and will eventually not go past 10mph, on a full tank of gas. The car smells like its overheating, but the thermometer is only at the half point at times.
I hear a ticking when going up hill in my 96 ford taurus. sound like something is tearing up....whatever it is, is keeping me for takeing off at regular speed. it feels like its in netural. plenty fluid, and new filter. been doing it for a while, now seems to be getting worse. Help!!
This is a good indication that the catalytic converter is bad. Other symptoms include a smelly sulphur like exhaust, a lot of heat coming from the exhaust (in the middle of the car), a lot of smoke from the exhaust.

If the car is revving high (foot to the floor) and won't accelerate, you should check the transmission fluid. Since we've ruled out the catalytic converter, sounds like the transmission is slipping. Â If the fluid level is good, check it for color. Â If it's brown and smells burnt, it needs changing along with the filter. Â If the color and levels are good, have a transmission shop check it out.
Even a poorly tuned engine running on 1 or 2 cylinders would run enough to let your car travel more than 10MPH. Â I'd have it towed to a transmission shop as I think that is most likely your problem.

Well here is my problem with the cat, I have the rear one removed and a piece of tail pipe put in...and yet the problem is still there.
The car has been fine since I did this, and now a year later it is acting up yet again!
Well the car wont accelerate,or rev at all! I dont know what else to do. I turned it on, foot to the floor, and nothing but some choking. it only revved to about 2-3 and that was it.
