92 Toyota Camry Downshift into 3rd gear problem

I can shift up to 3rd 99% of the time with no noise at all. However, when I shift down to 3rd gear, 99% of the time, it makes a slight grinding noise. Sometimes it is accompanied by a slight vibration in the ball. My dad seems to think it might be a bushing. Any ideas?

You responded to my 92 Camry problem. It is a 5 speed manual transmission. It goes into gear just fine, but it just makes a slight grinding noise when downshifting into 3rd. It very rarely makes any noise shifting UP into 3rd.

I just found two links on a forum that mention changing some bushings and the tranny fluid.

No downshift on 92 4runner

It can't find 1st when moving off? I'd say your No1/2 shift solenoid has failed in the trans. They are fitted as a pair, best done on a hoist. Change the internal trans filter as well.

I was driving to work this morning and was in 3rd gear, went to down shift at a stop sign and its stuck in 3rd gear. 1988 jeep wrangler. It has been grinding the gear for a few weeks now everytime I change...

The 3rd Gear Synchro is worn or damaged, which is why it grinds when you try to upshift or downshift into 3rd gear. When it goes out completely you will have a very hard time shifting into 3rd gear, since the Synchro lines up the gears to make shifts smooth and easy.

92 chevy s10 4x4 4.3L manual transmission no 3rd gear

Hi:

Your transmission has 3 shift rails...
1st - 2nd
3rd -4th
5th- Reverse

If your 3rd gear doesn't work , you have an internal transmission problem, such as a syncronizer, or similar fail... There is not much you can fix, without removeing the transmission.

GEAR SHIFTING CAMRY 2004 2.4 XLI

Hi,

This might be because of the gear box problem. By any chance, did your car face flooding? In such cases, please drain the gear box and replace it with new gear fluids. Also, check if you go in low speeds, you might be able to engage it with ease. Please come back to me if you feel this doesnt solve your issue.

Regards,
Hari

92 toyota camry 5speed

it sounds like you ground the spacers between the gears. have a look under the gear shift. pull the gear shift off then look at the transmission spacers. you will see where the gear shift sits see if some spacers look like the rest.
