I'm trying to time my engine after a rebuild and the TDC paint has worn off of the pulley. On pictures of the a new pulley, the TDC is the far left, which indicates that 15 BTDC is 3 notches to the right. However, the engine really seems to like running at about 6 notches to the right (30 BTDC). Is the TDC notch on the original pulleys on the far left, or are they more in the middle?
If you have a series of notches on the pulley then the middle notch of them all is TDC. Point of fact is that the notches represent BTDC ( before TDC ---advanced) and AFTDC ( after TDC-- late firing past TDC). If the engine is starting and running ok then it is not at 30 degrees BTDC or it would not start easily. Each notch probably represents 5 degrees

according to a manual , the crank key will point to arrow , the intake cam should have an letter i aligned with arrow on belt cover and exhaust cam should have letter e aligned with arrow on belt cover , and as always rotate the engine 2 full turns to inspect timing marks before cranking or trying to start the engine . if you haven't taken the original belt off yet , paint your marks for quicker reference .

This is the same as a Ford Escort 1.9, the #1 cylinder should be all the way up. To confirm- the crak shift mark should be on zero which is Crank Shift Center- THe camshift sproket should align with the headmark. Make sure both marks don't move. Align the belt- not too tight , not to loose
