UnforUnfortunately, ala Gordon Ramsey, it is how they say, "cooked."? But before you do anything ask around, or look up on line for some really good repair shops that do not do transmissions. Ask who they recommend. Ask if they know any race car mechanics. Ask them who does their transmissions. I did that and got a shop that did an outstanding job. It cost me $3000. But, if you buy a junk yard tranny, even with a guarantee, you have to pay labor to put it in, then take it out if it fails. That is a real risk. A good shop will test your engine first. If your engine is in good shape and you arre satisfied with the rest of the car, then a transmission will last you at least 100K. I had 170K on the first one, replaced it and have 85K on the new one. Some shops like mine will even come pick your car up for free or for less than you'd pay a tow truck. You are still looking at a sizeable sum so its is worth considering the cost.

Make sure that your axles aren't broken. If you have a broken axle the power would transfer to the wheel with the least amount of resistance (to the broken axle) therefore not propelling the vehicle. Also look at your fluid level and condition. It is possible that the transmission is slipping in which case you'd need a transmission/rebuild.

SOURCE: shifts into gear roughly

the pin in the differential inside the trans probably came out. you need a new transmission since this usually causes major case damage.

Is the check engine light on ?
You may have a problem with a solenoid or pressure problem in the transaxle.

98 Chrysler Town & Country Ignition, steering wheel & gear shift are all locked up. Last night we stopped to get some fast food. When we came back out to the van, it would not allow us to move...

Sometimes the mechanical system that locks your steering wheel has too much vehicle weight which can prevent the key from turning. If you can move the vehicle back and forth while someone turn the steering wheel and turn the ignition switch.

Won't shift out of second gear

There are a couple of videos on youtube where people solved the same problem by replacing
the input speed sensor Costs about $30.00 for part.
Maybe this would help?
I am not a mechanic but I have same problem and am trying to get to the bottom of it
May 1996 van has been doing the same thing for a couple years. It will then sometimes
shift into 3rd gear after driving awhile.
Unfortunately my van is now stuck in driveway in reverse so I cant even start it

98 twn and country van trans slips into reverse and first gear when its cold. Is there a simple fixx

There is probably a problem with the cable and/or cable connection/shifting bracket to the transmission. It is located on the top of the transmission. With a Partner: have them turn the key to the on (not start) position and have them shift to each of the PRNDL positions.
Meanwhile YOU: Inspect that area to ensure nothing is impeding the cable/cable connection/shifting bracket, or interfering their operation.
When shifting, is the Indicator "on" or to the left or right of the appropriate selection (PRNDL)? If the indicator is to the left or right of them there is a good possibility that you need to loosen the gear cable connection, located on top of the transmission and pull the shifting bracket going into the transmission - towards the front of the car. While holding the bracket to the front (Park) position tighten back down the cable fasteners.

Transmission still shifts erractically

well if you have a lot of millage it could only be the gearpump in the transy thats finished, unfotuntly ...you cant really change -it without rebuilding the all transy
other than that you still can drive-it but try letting the gear go on by it self ,you could damage your van by doing that !! you mignt not have choice but if you do ...try not doing-it!

A chattering noise appears when I put the transmission in gear

Hi,
Sounds like a worn/bad/damage transmisison or engine mount. These hold the engine and trans in place and usually have a rubber part that can wear out.

Either a trans shop or regular mechanic will need to diagnose.

I don't know the cost.
