I had a new battery installed after the old one kept going flat after not being driven for 24 hours, now the new one goes flat after not being driven for 10-12 hours! An audi specialist garage have tested it & said there is something in the dash pod draining the battery so it has to be repaired. Is this a common fault in Audi A4s? Its 7 years old

+1 ^^^^ parasitic drain. Could do an amperage drain test by pulling fuses one at a time and put back. Make sure doors are shut and wait a minute or so.

You'll have a parasitic power drain.
Not uncommon in modern heavily electronic cars.
There are several modules in a modern car operating various items of equipment.
The dash of the A4 will house the immobiliser amongst other things.
There may well be a module not going into "sleep" mode after car shut down. It will need repair or replacement to sort it out.

SOURCE: 2004 Audi A4 Avant rear parking sensors are not

Try to clean rear parking sensors. Check also electric cables and connections, clean if necessary. Commons faults are sensors out of order. If one or more sensors faults you hear only a continous constant noise when you put in "R" gear. You need a VAS, VAG-COM, Bosch KTS, ... diagnosis scantool. The factory parking system will be scaned from errors with this instrument, and you will find exactly which sensors are out of order (for example: rear left center sensor, rear right side sensor break off, short to ground or short to plus).

It could be that the thermostat is stuck in the open position thus providing maximum coolant flow through the engine when the engine is still cold, ie from a cold start. (The thermo should close when the engine is stopped and cold and it opens up once the coolant temp increases and the engine has been running for a few minutes.) Once the engine is hot maximum coolant flow between engine and radiator is normal.

Do you also find that your heater takes a while to provide warm air to the cabin in winter when you notice this condition?

If you do not know when the thermostat was last changed then I would suggest you change it. ( If it malfunctions and sticks in the closed position you will really have a problem). The radiator/engine coolant could no doubt do with a flush and change in any event as it should be done every 2 years. If you don't know when it was last done - do it. Cooling systems tend to be a neglected part of essential vehicle maintenance.

SOURCE: audi a4 alternator not charging battery--test

With volt meter on battery start car and read voltage. When yo first put the meter on a full charged battery it should read between 13-15 volts. When you first start motor the voltage should go 3-4volts higher then when you first put it on. And then tapper down after awhile. If there is no voltage increase after start alternator is out.

Testimonial: "yup it is the alternator, trickle charged the battery and it held. After running car, it drained."

2004 XC90 Volvo, fan will not turn off, just installed new battery

you mean the engine fan or the interior heater fan ? if the engine fan it must just be a coincedence or the fan was running on before, and you might not have noticed, and if you replaced the battery because it kept going flat the fan running on to long could be the reason ,the engine temp sender may be the fault as fan is designed to run on after engine turned off to cool down components,so i'd get the OBD codes read this will pinpoint the sensor/switch that is at fault, save you time and money,as a temp fix see if you can disconnect the wire to the fan when engine has cooled as the new battery will soon be toast , plug back in when starting engine again being carefull in case the fan cuts in straight away which would also point to temp sender switch, keep me posted if you wish

New battery dying after 24 hours if cars are not driven. All electrical tests OK, battery test OK ??? Alternator OK. Mechanic does not know what could cause it. What to do?

You will need to check for a draw on the system. you will need a volt meter that can measure amperage. Remove the positive battery cable from the battery. With the volt meter set to measure amperage place one lead on the positive battery post and the other lead on the positive battery cable. If you see more than .050 amps you have a draw. I would suspect that you have closer to .500 amp for the battery to go dead overnight.

Battery keeps going dead

Does it go dead after sitting for a few hours? Once started and driven for several miles will it restart if the engine is shutoff? If the battery goes dead only after sitting for a while with the engine off, you probably have a bulb or some accessory that is draining the battery.

Will not start after installing new battery . Old battery was stolen from car . All fuses OK. Fuel pump is OK. Spark appears a bit week when plug wire tested to earth while engine is cranked .Could it be...

if the battery was removed wrong it could have damaged the ecu. the ecu does not like the positive lead removing first. even without the ignition being on a little power still goes into the ecu. you might be able to repair the ecu some ecu's in the old type ecus had a fuse on the ecu board it could of just blown this.

The 12 volt battery(LUCAS 065/3) on my FORD FIESTA 1100cc is 4 years old, in that time i have only driven 1,600 miles as my journeys are usually very local. I make sure i use the car twice a week to keep...

Running so few miles has accelerated the aging of the battery - the battery never had a chance to fully recharge in such small trips -  so now you have to replace it a year sooner than usual.
Just replace it.

Flat battery

Sounds like the timing unit which automatically turns off your dome lights after a few minutes is working backwards. Probably need a new unit.
