as long as your Catylitic converter is working then you may not see smoke .. but the converter may be operating really hot .. and it may eventually be damaged .. since there are no external leaks detected then the most likely thing in the engine is the valve guides .. those can be repaired in a shop that does that kind of work (head rebuilding) .. you could have piston ring wear but not as likely since you changed oil regularly .. you could have a compression check done that will tell you the health of the rings .. also make sure the pcv valve is replaced or cleaned (if you have one) ... if its clogged then oil could be blown out when you are driving and not when you are sitting still .. you should still see some signs of that .. at any rate if its burning oil that much then the next expensive problem will be the catylitic converter .. so its important to get the problem fixed sooner than later ...

this could be a serious problem as you stated oil residue in exhaust pipe. You can remove spark plugs and check for oil fouling, this is a sign of bad rings, valve guides or seals. A cylinder leak down test would be your best check at this point to see if there is piston ring damage. If the rings are bad, oil would be burned at higher r.p.m. and may not be noticed at idle. I strongly suggest returning to dealer if under warranty or qualified mechanic as potential for engine failure may be present.

Water in motor oil causes that white foam, it is common. A small amount will not hurt the vehicle very much, and is normal for winter, in places with a high humidity.

The reprogramming preformed is due to a fault in the EGR valve causing faulty actuation. The actuation of the valve prevents soot acumulation in the valve. excessive soot build up could cause the valve to stick. the reprogramming preformed is to prevent this... as for the whine.. I dont think this would be a result of the reprogram.. best of luck

Your mechanic is spot on. The A4's are notorious for turbo overheating and failure. The oil burn is coming in the TURBO itself and then being distributed to 2.3.4 as a side effect. Your not noticing blue smoke because your catalytic converter is doing its job and the minor smoke being generated is being taken care of in the CAT. If you continue to drive as is you will run a certain risk of catalytic converter damage, cylinder damage from fouling (cylinder wash) build up, sludge, etc. If your mechanic has the knowledge on this specifc model there is a way to test the turbo output and turbo heat generation to absolutely confirm. One last thing. in ANY turbo car its imperative to run QUALITY oils not your local wal-mart brand or no name. Many people are not familiar with the demands on a TURBO engine and oil change facilities pull standard oil from 55 gallon drums via a pump.. so you arent feeding your car properly. The AVG (Audi/Volkswagen) company recommends FULL SYNTHETIC and either Castrol or Mobil 1. I have a Turbo Diesel and use Mobil1 as my choice. The recommended oil for your car via their web page is
