Shifting Problem 1998 Ford Escort zx2 manual transmission. I have had a problem with the transmission not wanting to go into gear. The gears do not grind, the shifter will not go into gear. Sounds like either the shifter linkage is binding up since the master cylinder has been checked and the slave cylinder has been changed and bled. Any suggestions?

Could be a worn out piolet bearing located in the back of the crankshaft in front of the clutch plate.

SOURCE: Automatic Gear Shifter Light Burned Out

hi.t thing to do firstly is check your fuses under bonnet and then check the fuses inside the car which are mostly under the dashboard and are easy to get to.
It could be that one of your other fuses has blown and caused this to short circuit.
Check all the fuses throughout and if they are all ok except the one that lights up the gears your in,then change that one.
It might not be that the bulb has blown at all.
If this all fails, then you will have to go through the process of taking out the centre concule which is or should only be clipped into place by self tapping screws which should just pop out with a flat ended screw driver and are easy to push back into place with your thumb.
Hope this has helped.

SOURCE: My 98 Escort ZX2 manual transmisson seems to shift gear hard!

Clutch may be smooth but this is a sign of the clutch needing replaced. Some of these models have a linkage adjustment under the hood. Others are hydrallic and need fluid. Look under the hood where the steering is and see which you have and address accordingly. Good luck. Check on costs of clutch replacement.

SOURCE: What would prevent the clutch

Have you considered the syncronizers? if they are the problem though you will need a mechanic to repair it as they are not DIY unless you have a lot of experience

It sounds like your clutch is out pull inspection cover off and see if you have any lining left on disk

My 98 auto. ford escort zx2 will not take any gear nor move.

Sounds like you have really screwed the pooch here. What I suspect you did was put the wrong transmission fluid in when you replaced the fluid. If you did use the right fluid, then I would suspect that there is not enough fluid in the transmission to make it work. Check if you used the right fluid and also check your trans fluid level.

1998 zx2 automatic trans won't shift past 2'nd gear

Governor may be stuck. a solenoid may be stuck open, or stuck closed, or the transmission throttle cable has come undone at one end or the other or has come loose at the ajustment point.

Is the fluid level correct? Is the tranmission fluid correct? (foaming issue) Does the fluid smell burned significantly?

Will it shift if you let up on the accelerator for an instant and then step on it again? If it will shift while doing that, add some seal conditioner as you have a leaking servo seal or clutch apply seal. If that does not correct it after a period of time, the only real fix will be to pull the transmission and do a rebuild.

Is a 2000 ford escort manual compatable with a 2001 ford escort zx2

All ZX2 transmissions will work no matter what year. If you are trying to use a sedan transmission, it is possible with some modification. The sedan transmission has one threaded hole for the starter that will need to be drilled out. There are, I think, three bolt holes for the bell housing that won't line up but that isn't a problem. Otherwise, it fits just fine. The gearing is taller in the sedan and you'll notice the car won't accelerate as fast but your gas mileage should get better.

Where is the transmission level check plug on a 2001 ford escort zx2

If it is a manual transmission you will have to removed the speed sensor from the transmission. Fluid should be at or near the top of the gear on the sensor.

Manual Transmission fluid for Ford Escort ZX2

I know this sounds crazy according to Ford:

You can use-
Motorcraft MERCON Multi-Purpose (ATF) Transmission Fluid XT-2-QDX MERCON® Alternative Transaxle Fluid - SAE 75W90 Gear Oil F32Z-19C547-MA API GL-4
You are seeing that right, one instance they call for 75W90 and the other it is ATF. It is ok to run either, 75W90 will give you smoother shifts and less noise.

This transmission is filled through the VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) hole.
