I have a 2001 cadilac deville that has a wicked knock in the engine. it is a rod knock (from the sound) so i figure my options are to change the engine, or change the rod ect. I wanna know if the engine can be changed from the top out or does it have to be dropped out the bottom of the car. Looks like quite a job! thanx

Thats going to be a tricky pull. you can actually do BOTH methods fro pulling that motor. Which ever is easier for you would be better.

As far as the rod knock. Rod knock simply means that the rod bearing has spun and is no longer a smooth surface. potentially, you could pull the motor and replace just that rod and bearing if the crankshaft was unaffected. the majority of the time, more work needs to be done. I think in this case, it may be cheaper to remove the motor and replace the crank and bearings. A replacement used motor will probably run about 1k if you can find one at a yard.

I personally have never changed a fuel filter in that model year. You can Google it and find detailed instruction on all to do it. I would think that it would not be that big of a headache…

SOURCE: change water pomp

First of all,you will need the Northstar waterpump removal tool, You can get this from most reputable auto part stores.

9a23afb.gif

You need to remove the air filter housing and ducting to gain easy access to the pump.

Remove the shield covering the pulley and belt. The belt is easily removed by levering the tensioner pulley.

The water pump is located at the lower radiator hose manifold where you will also find the thermostat.Remove the manifold cover and you will see the water pump.

Insert the removal tool over the pump making sure it is locked in position. You will need to use a breaker bar on the removal tool and turn the tool CLOCKWISE to release the pump (1/4 turn), or if you imagine the breaker bar being vertical, push towards the windscreen of your car,it takes quite a bit of force to unseat the pump hence the use of a breaker bar.

Installing the new pump does not require as much torque as removing the old one.
Tighten the new pump to 73 ft.lbs. making sure it is seated properly before tightening.

Don't forget to clean out the water pump housing prior to installing the new pump and don't forget to include a new water pump gasket and housing cover gasket.

It is also a good idea to install a new thermostat while you're at it.

SOURCE: cadilac deville 2001 runs hot when you get into

The most common overheating problem with the Northstar engine is a blocked purge line(small hose). The purge line is designed to purge air out of the cooling system.
There is a small diameter hose coming from near the top of the coolant tank (not the cap) ,this is the purge line.
With the engine idling, pull the purge line from the tank,if there is no coolant flow from this small hose,it is blocked and this will cause overheating.
If the hose is clear, check for blockage at the nipple on the tank.Or trace the hose back until you find the blockage.
The hose goes in to the engine to a crossover and comes out the other side close to the thermostat housing, the blockage may be there.

Also note that the cooling fans don't come on until the coolant temperature hits around 225 degrees.
During normal highway driving the fans will very rarely come on(if at all) due to constant air flow through the radiator. They will only usually come on in heavy traffic conditions on a hot day.
But......if you have the Air Con switched on, the fans will run all of the time.

2001 crown vic leaks oil and makes knocking sound when i accelerate, what can this be and please dont say rod knock

Can be several things. I want to say spark knock. Don't remember if your engine came with a Knock sensor.

Also stretched timing chain or weak timing chain tensioner. Another term to look at is "valve rattle". This would give you closer to a machine gun sound than other things.

Change starter in 2001 cad devile

The starter on that engine is mounted between the cylinder heads under the intake manifold. You will need a set of injector O-rings and an intake manifold gasket set to do the job. It is not really hard to do, but a bunch of stuff has to come loose to get the manifold off.
HINT: The gasket surfaces for the intake manifold are very easy to clean up in preparation of re-installing the manifold if you use some rags and carburetor cleaner.

My 01 has a bad knocking noise what does this mean?

it means that you need to research either a different car, or a different engine for this car. A loud knocking noise indicates a connecting rod is loose, and your engine has little to no time left before the rod or endcap breaks, completely messing up your engine, and making it very difficult to change. If you must drive it, drive it slow, and be super gentle with the gas...like you're driving on ice. If it's more of a ticking noise, that could be a lifter, but a loud hollow sounding knock is a rod. You may also have a check engine light showing up on the dash from the knock sensor.
