2000 Ford focus: periodically would take a while to kick-in on starting, but when started would run well, yet exhaust wiould always have a fuel odor. Then one day it would turn over, but not start. Battery seemed good, but jumped it to another car, and still wouldn't start. Then a couple of days later it started, but idled so rough that I had to shut it off. I went out later to try starting it again, but could not get ignition. Saw that the check engine light was on.Turned key on and heard the fuel pump kick in, pulled out the 4 spark plugs in the Z 16 valve engine, on one the top of the spark plug pulled out with the spark plug wire, so I was convinced this was the problem. Replace all four spark plugs. Disconneccted the negative battery terminal to shut of the check engine light, reconnected the battery, proudly went to start the engine, thinking that I solved the problem -- no dice! Engine turns over with no ignition, and check engine light is back on! What am I missing here?
Go to any national chain parts store and they will pull the code for you-I'd guess based on what you wrote that it is a crank or cam sensor, or a bad ignition module.

If I could get the car to a national chain to pull the codes for this problem, I guess I wouldn't have tried here. Years ago somebody told me how to pull the codes with a paper clip. All you had to do when the conection was made was to count the flashing light. There'd be a series of flashes, a pause, another series of flashes, another pause, etc. the count of each series would give you a number, like *** ***** ** would be 3 5 2. Does anyone recall how this works, because I forgot the details?

not starting or turning over indicates towards multiple possibilities. It can
be issue with battery or weak battery. But if battery checks out ok, then it
can be starter issue or faulty alternator or problem with low fuel pressure or
no spark at spark plugs due to dirty spark plugs or faulty ignition
coil or injectors getting cracked or dirty and needs to be cleaned.
