2003 Ford Windstart erratic shifting

My 2003 Windstar has had problems with erratic shifting to a lower gear then back. I was told it was the Torque Converter slipping and i just had it replaced when it finally would not go into gear. Unfortunately the downshifting problem has reemerged only 2 weks after the Torque converter was replaced. Any ideas?

There is a switch on the trans that goes to your computer to let it know what gear you are in. It can go bad and cause these probs. You may have to replace it.

SOURCE: escape will not go above 60mph and will not downshift w/gas pedal

It could very well be a restriction in the exhaust like a stopped up cat converter. I doubt if it is a torque converter, that may make it slow to get to speed but shouldn't effect hwy speeds.
You can check this vehicle for an exhaust restriction very easy by going to the DPFE sensor and measuring exhaust back pressure with a vacuum/pressure gage. It will be either silver or black in color will have 2 rubber hoses hooked to it going down to metal tubes that hook into the exhaust. It will have a 3 wire connector with the color of the wires being BN/WH,BN/LG,OG. Disconnect one of the rubber hoses from the sensor and hook the vacuum/pressure gage into the hose. You should have less than 1 psi at idle, then press accel to wide open throttle and take a reading,it should be no higher than 3-4 psi. Anything more is an exhaust restriction.

SOURCE: Transmission Leak. Torque Converter Front Seal?

I know that GM dosen't have a fill/check tube on several models. They use a plug on the side of the unit (like on stickshift transmissions) I'm sure there would be a similar item on your transmission otherwise after a rebuild, there would be no way to refill it. If it's a small leak you could try using a good sealer/conditioner such as Lucas, which may help you a lot.

Hi, I have a 98 Windstar that recently began having transmission problems. When we first drive it starts out fine but once we've driven several miles it will get stuck in 2nd gear.

The switches inside need to be replaced they are hanging up do this now before you ruin the clutches it will go back to normal shifting and work fine change all pressure torque lockup and shift switches diy for about 125.00 with fluid filter cost and back to normal shifting and a happy van and crew make sure vans not running hot burning fluid otherwise will happen again high temp burned fluid damages switches ability to work

My 2001 ford windstart the speedometer and odometer stop working

Check first the speed sensor or speedometer cable which ever one it has (i dont know the age of the vehicle). Both attach to the transmission at the same place. Check plugs into the wiring harness.

About this, I find this TSB information:
Bulletin Number: 0
Bulletin Date: 19970123
Category: 105000 POWER TRAIN:DRIVELINE
Summary: INTERMITTENT SURGING, BUCKING OR SHUDDER CONCERN, INTERMEDIATE ERRATIC SPEEDOMETER AND/OR POSSIBLY DTC 452- INSPECT THE VSS AND SPEEDO GEAR. *JD

I suggest ask your dealer about this TSB (Technica Service Bulletin) .

Keep us updated.

Very common, The pump drive splines in the torque converter are stripped. You will at least need to have the converter replaced. You can confirm this by checking the fluid with the engine off and then on.The fluid will be lower with the engine running if the pump is working.

Driving a 2003 Ford windstar. Went to pass and

Very common on this make and model trans, pump drive splines inside torque converter strip out and pump is not turning, Most times there is no damage to pump shaft. Remove trans and remove torque converter, inspect the splines at the very bottom of the hub hole. If stripped out inspected pump shaft splines which are the smaller center splines coming out of trans, if ok replace torque converter and re-install trans, change out fluid, clean any metal from magnet and replace filter, fill with fluid and verify proper operation.
