Remove the oil light sender unit, fit a oil pressure gauge start engine if oil pressure present replace sender unit, if no pressure oil pump is at fault or pressure valve stuck open
There is no relief valve on the oil pump.
The valve is on a housing near the oil filter
Normal pressure with HOT oil is 15 to 20 PSI at tick over and around 60 PSI when the engine is reved up
Note oil pressure can be as high as 90 psi with engine oil cold and engine reved up
check oil level if good possible need oil change --filter collapse, check valve malfunction in filter,---sludge ,oil sender bad ,screen (certain vehicles have a screen in under sender)clogged -some vehicles when started switch over to the oil circuit to stay running if oil pressure problem then shuts off to protect motor
A few reasons , low on oil , faulty oil pump relief valve , faulty sender unit. Remove the oil sender unit fit a gauge, start engine and check oil pressure if ok replace sender unit . If still low check oil pump pick up strainer and relief valve spring.
check that the oil level is not over the mark as this causes foaming of the oil and loss of pressure. At 80km/hr you will be doing around 3 grand and that will be enough to whip the excess oil into froth.. Too much oil is worse than too little oil.
You will have to pull out your oil sender switch, and have a oil pressure gauge fitted, this will tell you if you have internal problems or it just the sender unit , your mechanic could do it in no time at all
It's a warning light system that no oil pressure exists. If it doesn't work, it won't cause damage, you just won't know if and when your oil pressure is lost. The sensor or sender unit is very inexpensive on most vehicles, like under $10. All the sender does is cause the oil light to go off when it detects minimal pressure. A valve inside the sender moves and causes the sender to stop grounding the warning light, and so the light goes off.
not sure what you wont to know but the sender will be mostlikly near the oil filter, with ignition on short the wire and the oil pressure gauge will read high or oil pressure light will go off youll know you have the wright sender
Bad sender is most likely, but could also be stuck oil pressure relief valve. You need to be sure, or the pump could break and destroy the engine. Try a cheap mechanical gauge instead, screwed into the sender hole. If pressure good there, then check the sender with ohmmeter. If 0 or infinite ohms, replace sender. If not, see if gauge drops to 0 when sender disconnected. If not, then gauge bad.
If cleaning the engine does not work, replace the oil press. sending
unit. These senders on Jeeps have had a history of problems where they
will work one day and not the next day.
