Definitely not a do-it-yourself project. It involves discharging the air conditioning system and pulling the steering column and dashboard.

Hope helped.

SOURCE: heater core. where is it

Heater Core REMOVAL & INSTALLATION For the removal of the heater core, which is located inside the heater-A/C unit assembly, first remove the heater-A/C unit assembly from the vehicle as described later in this section. Once the unit has been removed, use the following procedure to extract the heater core:

  1. Place the heater-A/C unit on a suitable work surface.
  2. Locate and remove one retaining nut from the blend-air door pivot shaft.
  3. To remove the top cover from the heater-A/C case, the crank arm must be removed.
  4. Disconnect the vacuum lines from the defroster and panel mode vacuum actuators and position them out of the way.
  5. Remove the 3 heater-A/C unit cover attaching screws, fastened upward at the defroster outlet chamber.
  6. Remove the 2 heater-A/C unit cover attaching screws, fastened upward at the air inlet plenum.
  7. Remove the 11 heater-A/C unit cover attaching screws, fastened downward into the housing. Then lift the cover from the heater-A/C unit.
  8. Remove the old heater core from the case. To install:
  9. Install the new heater core into the heater-A/C unit case in the same position as the old one.
  10. Place the cover onto the case and secure in place with the 11 retaining screws.
  11. Install the 2 heater-A/C unit cover attaching screws in the air inlet plenum.
  12. Install the 3 heater-A/C unit cover attaching screws in the defroster outlet chamber.
  13. Attach the vacuum lines from the defroster and panel mode vacuum actuators to the heater-A/C unit case.
  14. Install the crank arm and the retaining nut on the blend-air door pivot shaft.
  15. Install the heater-A/C unit assembly into the vehicle.

Need to know where my Heater Core hoses hook up to on the engine? I see the Hoses but is there a seperate part that the hose connects to?

The best way to locate a heater core hose is to determine where the heater core is located. Many vehicles have the heater core inside the dash. Other vehicles, usually larger vans and trucks, will have a heater core box inside the engine compartment. Once you have determined where the heater core is located in your vehicle, that will allow you to easily locate a heater core hose. If the heater core is inside the dash, you'll need to examine the firewall for the hoses. If it is in a heater box, you'll need to look around the engine compartment for the box.

Heater cores located inside dashes can be very difficult and time consuming to replace. Depending on the layout of your engine compartment, it can also be difficult to locate a heater core hose. If there is very little clearance between the engine and the firewall, you may have difficulty finding the hoses. You might need to use a flashlight to look from the underside in some cases. You will typically be able to identify the heater hoses where they enter the firewall by looking for two two small diameter hoses that protrude into the engine compartment. You can then trace those hoses to their other ends, where they will typically connect to a thermostat housing, the radiator, or a t-connector.

Hope this helps.

Trying to locate heater core location

Inspect/Replace If it is necessary to remove the heater assembly, the cooling system must be drained before removing the heater core.
When a heater core leaks, a new heater core is installed or the old one repaired.
Heater Housing
  • The heater housing is usually under the dash and must be removed to gain access to the heater core.
  • Procedures for replacing the heater core vary with the year, make, and model of car. It threfore necessary to consult the manufacturer's repair manuals for the proper procedure for replacement.
f74-01.gif The heater housing is disassembled to get to the heater core. Heater Core
  • Remove the access panels(s) or the split heater/air conditioning case to gain acess to the heater core.
  • Remove the heater coolant hoses.
  • Remove the cable and/or vacuum control lines (if equipped).
  • Remove the heater core securing brackets and/or clamps.
  • Lift the core from the case. Do not use force. Take care not to damage the fins of the heater core when removing.
  • To reinstall the heater core, reverse the removal steps.
When the heater core leaks and must be repaired or replaced, it is a very difficult and time-consuming job primarily because of the core's location deep within the firewall of the car. For this reason always leak test a replacement heater core before installation.

Removing/replacing a 2000 kia sportage 4x4 4 dr heater core

The heater is located under the dash board to the right and down from the radio. To remove and replace it you will have to remove the dash board down to the fire wall. Also, you will have to disconnect two hoses that connect up to it from the engine compartment. These are located in the back of the engine and down on the firewall about midway. Once you remove the dash board and locate the heater core you will be able to see the location of these two hoses. Removing the heater core is time consuming but it will save you about 700 dollars.
