if it has ratcheting calipers , you will need to clamp off brake line , open bleeder and turn in the piston counter clockwise with proper tool to get it back in , will need to bleed when done

Adjusting the Hand Brake is quite easy

At the bottom of the Hand Brake Lever , you will see the cable with like nuts (teeth) on the cable locked by the lock on the lever it self, you will need to open the lock , take the cable off the lock , drop the handle down and put the cable back on the lever and lock it.

That is how the hand brake is adjusted on the Smart car 2002 model

Poor rear braking how do rear shoes adjust new shoes and wheel cylinders fitted all handbrake cables and fittings in p.o.w
If these are new Shoes make sure they are put on right .the big paded one goes toward the front,and the small one toward the back....OK...

Does the abs sensor have to come off to change rear brake shoes on accent?
hi from the uk in answer to your question you do not need to disconnect or remove the abs sensor you just remove the brake drum from the hub then remove shoe locating springs that retain shoes to backplate then lift off and remove bottom return spring this then allows you to slip the brake shoes off w/cyl at top complete with spring and auto adjuster ? then to remove the handbrake cable just pull the shoe and the quadrant lever apart so cable can be lifted out of the hook up on lever ? you can now interchange shes/springs /adjuster on your bench ? also run te adjuster wheel back on thread to off position this will enable you to fit shoes back to backplate and moreso help in fitting cable to its hookup ? when brakeshoes are refitted ? and centralized on back plate ? you can manuall rotate the adjuster wheel and keep tryin the drum for fitting and rotating with no binding trial/error method when satisfied ? refit screws to secure drum then do same with other side when completed you must bleed both wheels this will improve b/pedal your handbrake will also be better/less travel when applied hope these instructions help you ? best wishes from uk

Rear wheel brakes sticking and dragging,and there is a whine at rear wheels.fan heater not working. Can you help? Thank you.
Rear calipers siezed on the slider bolts or handbrake shoe springs broken .
Lose pinion nut on the diff shaft or low oil for the whine and the fuse or relay for the fan .

Yes, the brake shoe clearance has to be set at the minimum and the brake edges should be chamfered (angled) where it contacts metal in either direction, the shoes get hung in reverse if they are loose because of the movement of the entire brake assy, and they kind of get cocked & locked until you apply the brake. Once the brakes are adjusted correctly, there is no room for them to lock.

Try & pull up a hair on the handbrake lightly when this happens & it should remove the bind by centering the shoes within the drum.

Minimum brake clearance is the cure. Sometiimes if parts aren't replaced, the fit isn't perfect due to the lip remaining which prevents intalling the part at minimum clearance.

Hand Brake
At the bottom of the backplate is a rubber plug,pull it out
and inside is a tiny wheel you can turn with flat screwdriver or similar. Its down on both sides to move the handbrake shoes out to get a better handbrake.

Bolted on to the chassis same bolts as the towbar so if a towdar is fitted then you will have to remove both.

Handbrake problem
hi fro uk when you reassembled brake shoes? did you notice the tubular bar just below b/cylinder? it fits between the two shoes and has a toothed wheel on the treaded side(l/h) this is the auto adjuster ie as tooth wheel is rotated it extends the treaded side thus adjusting shoes to drum o/k? this is normally done auto by the small lever below but when fitting new shoes you must adjust this rod with tooth wheel and keep trying drum fitting when you can fit drum /just? fit and press brake to centralise shoes to drum then adjust again if req'd so that drum fits and rotates withh shoes not binding ?? do both sides THENyou willdrums fitted you will feel b/pedal is improved ie less travel on braking ? SO FIRST THING YOU HAVE TO DO IS SLACKEN OFF H/BRAKE CABLE ADJUSTMENT /SLACK ? then proceed with the above instruction afterwards if you do as above then you pull h/brake up one notch ? then adust slack from cable to light tension release h/brake and ensure wheels rotate freely when you apply h/brake it should hold on approx four//five notch ? hope this helps
